Am currently using Ultrasun SpF 30. Thinking of switching to Spf 50 and also trying Altruist brand. What is the difference in feel between 30 and 50 in both brands please? Thanks. Interested in both face and body although face is more sensitive to stickiness!

I use and have 30 SPF in both, I don't buy 50 spf as the extra protection is minimal and I find the formulas are often much thicker and sticker which I can't stand.

Overall I find Altruist is more creamy/ thicker before putting on but soaks well and doesn't react with mine or by sensitive children's skin.

The photo is,
top- Altruist 30 spf
middle- Ultrasun Family spf
bottom- Ultrasun Face 30 spf

I rubbed them all in (after removing some of the excess) after taking the photo and there was no difference in the look or feel between them.

I actually use Ultrasun tinted face day to day as it evens out my skin tone a bit.

My Dh is immunocompromised and has to wear sunscreen every day. His doctors recommended Altruist and Dh says it's really good fwiw

The altruist mist spray is excellent if you have children who hate suncream

BobnLen · 05/06/2024 18:03

I agree Ultrasun face 50 is thicker than face 30, I generally use the 30 unless out all day in the sun, the 50 is harder to put on, being thicker but I wear that if its very sunny because I had BCCs on my leg so am particularly careful with my face now. DH just wears the Ultrasun 30 body everywhere and doesn't bother with specific face cream.

ConsistentlyInconsistant · 05/06/2024 18:04

Altruist do a facial sunscreen that's quite thin. I swear by this brand.

heyhohello · 05/06/2024 18:35

I tend to sweat Altruist off if it is hot weather. Not so much with Ultrasun.

nightmareXmas · 05/06/2024 19:19

I haven't tried Ultrasun, but found the Altruist quite hard to rub in and didn't use it on my face for that reason. I haven't tried the thinner one for face suggested by @ConsistentlyInconsistant . Generally I find sunscreens make my eyes sting (apart from La Roche Posay Invisible Fluid 50+). Does anyone have this problem with Altruist or Ultrasun?

dizzyupthegirl86 · 05/06/2024 20:05

I found altruist stung my eyes after the first few wears, and then I started to use the biore aqua fluid which stings them less!

Kingsx1 · 05/06/2024 21:16

Thank you, very useful. Ultrasun face is the only one I have found so far that hasn’t stung my eyes but interested in Altruist as cheaper! I couldn’t bare the smell of Roche Posay.

IamOliveOil · 05/06/2024 21:23

I switched to Altruist factor 50 a few months ago, a colleague of mine with skin cancer recently diagnosed had been recommended by his specialist. I was using an another brand that was a lot more greasy and I looked shiny. Altruist sinks in well doesn’t give me that greasy look and whilst it goes on thick and looks white at first it sinks in really well. Plus a quarter of the price of the previous brand I used. I haven’t suffered with stinging eyes thankfully but it can be individual. I have not tried ultra sun tho but would be interested to try and compare.

PeonyBlush10 · 05/06/2024 21:44

My sister recommended the altruist range. I’ve tried the factor 50 in a tube - quite thick and creamy and easy to rub over a large surface area but sinks in well and I use it sometimes on my face instead of my usual Anthelios. I’m very happy with it. I’ve just ordered the larger volume in a spray for family use - I’ll carry the tube in my handbag on hot days. Great value.

PeonyBlush10 · 05/06/2024 21:45

I found Ultrasun more greasy

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 05/06/2024 22:17

We use Altruist (since being recommended it by DD’s dermatologist many years ago, she has a UV allergy so even with cream on exposure is very limited).

It is thick, but is one of the only ones that doesn’t make me feel too sticky. I don’t use much make up beyond kajal & mascara, so don’t know if it works well with foundation etc., but my L’Occitane moisturiser & hand cream seem to be happy underneath it and don’t make those weird grey skin slugs that other sun creams seem to when rubbing it over the top.

BeretRaspberry · 05/06/2024 23:24

I use Altruist all the time and love it. I use the SPF50 face fluid and find it great. It doesn’t sting my eyes - the ultrasun did and also made my acne flare.

I also use the Altruist SPF50 face primer for when I wear makeup. And we use the spray as a body SPF as a family.

Never heard of Altruist but use Ultrasun Face fluid which is very light but is spf 50.

I use it under foundation.

I've also recently bought their aerosol spf 50 which can be applied over make up as a top up later in the day.

FriendofDorothy · 14/08/2024 20:56

I swear by Altruist. It's the only one ive found that doesn't make my son rashy. It runs in nicely and is non greasy. I use the face fluid and occasionally I find my eyes stingy but only if I am very sweaty. I lioveAltruist even more now it is available in a 1 litre pump bottle of factor 50!

savvy7 · 15/08/2024 07:27

I have just switched from Ultrasun to Altruist due to cost. Tbh, I do prefer the Ultrasun one - it absorbs better, never irritates my eyes and the dispenser is better at only dispensing the right amount.

The Altruist one is pretty good though. I got it near my eyes and found it mildly irritating so am now more careful.

Still on the fence as to whether I am going to revert to Ultrasun.

I've discovered that there are various Korean brands for face with SPF 50 / PA++++ available on Amazon that don't sting my eyes. They are more expensive than Altruist & Ultrasun, but cheaper than La Roche Posay, and I don't need to use moisturiser underneath. I've been using Neutrogena Dry Touch 30 on my hands, arms and legs, which is fine and rubs in well. I just have to be careful not to touch my eyes without washing it off first.

JustCleaningtheBBQ · 15/08/2024 20:03

I use Ultrasun as I only need to apply once a day. It is expensive, but took a 500ml bottle to Spain for 2 weeks for a family of 5 and there still some left. Kids are older teens.

I like the fact that I can put it on and then not worry about having to reapply it every time someone comes out of the pool or sea.

Geneticsbunny · 16/08/2024 09:20

Boots often have the ultrasun spf50 travel size on a 3 for 2 promotion which is the cheapest way to buy it.

I’ve got a beauty of joseon one to try, but I’m trying to use up my Biore one before I dive into it!

This is a great tip.

I tried altruist spf 50 with primer, found it very thick and didn’t sink in well.

Oceangreyscale · 17/08/2024 07:45

I use the Altruist 50 and it's pretty easy to apply.
I buy loads of the small tubes and have one in each bag and in the kids schoolbags.
