Fake Tan

Plase can anyone advise/ talk me through fake tan?
It will only be going on my legs.
I have never used make up, and am not at all adept, I won't think you are being patronising - I know nothing.
If there is one that I can wash off if I mess it up, I would prefer that.
My skin is very white, although I have dark hair, so I think I could take a mediumish colour?
A beautician used to spray me in a little tent, but they have stopped doing that.

I use dove on my legs. It’s a tanning moisturizer. You absolutely can’t mess it up. You just apply it like you would any body moisturiser. I do it at night, and wake up next morning with a lovely tan.
The only time I have made a mistake, is when I unnecessarily applied it one night, and I looked a bit too orange.

For instant wash off I'd go with vita liberta body blur.
Pretty sure they do various shades.
This will help you with application as you can see what you're doing! It's basically leg make up.
Once you feel a bit more confident around the feet and ankle area you could try a gradual tanner- just like a moisturiser but with a hint of could that you can build up a few times a week.
Plenty on the market- I like L'Oréal and it's often on offer.
Lots of people rate the Dove one too.

Make sure you exfoliate first and apply a moisturiser to feet/toes/ankles.
If you can be bothered, wipe round you cuticles on your toes afterwards with a cotton bud and rub back of ankle with a dry towel or face cloth (not essential but these are the areas it can grip to )

Thank you for your reply - please may I ask does it wash off, and you mentioned unnecessarily applying - does that mean it lasts a few days, then you reapply?

Watching with interest! Does the Dove one smell ok?
I have no experience with gradual tanner or fake tan but I've heard people saying they can smell like biscuits!

@gardenmusic I have once used Rimmel leg makeup stuff and I used a mitt to apply it (to stop it dying my hands) and that seemed to be helpful.

Watching for tips from those in the know though - thanks for the thread

GinandGingerBeer Thank you googling Vita Liberta!

Exfoliate really well (scrubby gloves)
Moisturise really well every day for a good 2-3 days in advance
Blend tan with a mitt

I am HOPELESS with fake tans but if I do all this, it works beautifully. I only do legs too.

Skinny Tan spray one works well for me, I’m Celtically pale and the Medium is just a nice glow to take off the blue-white colour of my legs! I don’t look v tanned, as such, just less ghostly, which is how I want it.

Firstly, i'd recommend you do your whole body as otherwise it will be obvious it's just your legs- you can keep it a light shade though if that's a concern.

I agree about tinted moisturisers- they're a good option. You can also buy tan remover cheap if any real disasters occur.

If it's a one off however, I'd maybe look to finding another technician who can do it for you- better safe that sorry and it's a one off payment rather than buying a product that'll go dusty after one or two uses :)

Bondi sands ultra dark is what I use, I use it on my skin when it's very pale and it never ever looks orange, it's a lovely olive natural colour, I also use it when I have been using the sunbeds regularly for a little boost of extra glow, it's a great all rounder x

Isthatarealname · 05/06/2024 09:56

I'm not sure I would recommend only doing your legs, and I find the wash off ones a bit tricky because it is gets wet at all it starts to come off, so if you spill a drink you end up with white lines running.

If you go with a "proper" tan. Exfoliate and shave the day before. I use a tan remover and prep the day of first, wash that off then pop a little moisturizer on your knees, elbows and ankles. Apply the tan with a mitt to everywhere apart from hands, feet and face in sweeping motions. I use a make up brush for hands feet and face really making sure you go in-between toes, fingers, bending knuckles etc so its really blended. Get a tan with a guide colour so you can see where you put it. I finish off with a tiny amount of moisturizer rubbed into my hands. Wash off as per the bottle instructions. I never sleep in mine although I know most people do. I buy a 3 hour one, apply early evening and wash off before bed. Only wash off with water and keep going until water is clear. At least 10 hours after I will wash with soap etc to get that biscuit smell off (although they don't smell as bad as they used to)

GimmeGin · 05/06/2024 10:05

Omg. I go to zero effort with any prep for fake tan.

I use dove mousse. There is a light/medium shade. I use medium/dark, but it comes out quite light.

I haven’t had any problems with streaking. It takes about 5 mins to do face, arms and legs.

it does have a smell, but it’s not too awful.

it doesn’t wash off, but as it doesn’t streak, I really don’t want it to! I do a few days in a row if I’m wanting to look tanned.

gardenmusic · 05/06/2024 11:23

Right, legs deforrested, have Dove mousse.
Will silky mitt them tomorrow.
Will report back...
