T-shirt under a sleeveless dress?

Bare shoulders are not allowed at work. Would wearing a close-fitting t-shirt under a sleeveless dress work? I can imagine it would look OK under a dress with squareish straps and a squareish neckline - a bit like dungarees, but what about under other styles? Would it work to wear a t-shirt under a dress with spaghetti straps, or a halterneck, or with a v-neckline, or with tailoring/shaping around the bust?

I’ve never worn a T-shirt with a halter neck before but I’d probably recommend trying the dresses on with t shirts and seeing what you think. I think it would really depend on the style of your dress and how it fits you.

I don’t like the look at all, I definitely don’t think it would look professional in a work environment.
A crisp white shirt looks ok-ish though.

T shirt under spaghetti-straps dress (plus black over the knee pop socks) was what I wore to the school disco in 1995. So I think you should on that basis alone.

Yes channel your inner 90s Cher from Clueless.

What's wrong with bare shoulders?

Nothing, they are just not allowed at OP job.

Id probably be more likely to wear a cardigan or light jacket/blazer over the dress

Dilbertian · 02/06/2024 07:45

That's a good idea, @WishIWasYourSexyBacon. I hadn't thought of trying it with different styles of shirts, or of googling that phrase. Thanks!

@RampantIvy, dress code. No bare knees, shoulders or midriffs. Same applies to men and women (if anything, women get more leeway in other aspects of clothing).

Bare knees? That sounds difficult, I think all my dress are above the knee. What industry do you work in?

Catandsquirrel · 02/06/2024 08:06

I think it can work well. A fine, good quality cotton t shirt under a sleeveless wool work dress (not sure about halter). 3/4 length sleeves look good. Collared shirt could work but not my style.

I used to wear this quite a bit. It's worth checking the t-shirt either doesn't show over the collar of the dress, or it has a fully visible neckline, not half covered, half not.

I like the white T under a strappy 90s dress too, perhaps with a long late 90s blazer for the office

If you wear tights your knees are not bare, but this prevents shorts.

You can definitely wear tights and shorts!

I'm wondering if OP is a teacher or works in a school.
