Aging skin still prone to breakouts - which moisturiser??

Hello,

I've always had greasy skin and while I never had acne I've always been prone to breakouts, worse just before my period so partly hormonal. Because of this I've never really used moisturiser, which I'm sure I should have been...

I'm now 42 and the texture of my skin is starting to change, there's the beginnings of a little crepiness on my neck etc...

But I also still get spots!

I is s there anything out there that would plump my skin a bit without aggravating the spots?

Ageing but still prone to spots is not a good look.

Something very gentle like la Roche Posay Toleriane.
Your skin might be producing more oil because it needs hydration.

Yes, I've been told that might be the case before but whenever I've tried moisturisers in the past I've never found anything that didn't induce spots. Sort of blister like, they appear suddenly overnight.

But my skin is definitely drier now so it really does need something. Will look at la roche, Thankyou.

I went through a phase of this in my early 40s and it was definitely hormonal retrospectively. Not sure what the answer is but it's likely early peri menopause. Bhas & Ahas helped.

CeraVe every time.

The ceramics protect the skin barrier which helps to stop breakouts. I speak from experience.

A bit of retinol wouldn't go amiss as well for both ageing and breakouts

*ceramides

OP I get hormonal breakouts too - the cerave anti blemish serum has been a game changer. Works like a charm and has drastically reduced them for me.
Then in terms of moisturiser I use the cerave one - comes in the blue pump bottle. Because cerave is on the cheaper side I then splash out a little more on my serums and SPF :) but deffo would recommend and see if it helps reduce your breakouts while keeping skin hydrated X

Oh cerave sounds perfect. I've looked in confusion at various retinol products but don't know where to start.

I've developed some lines I discovered are called 'elevens' and have been sticking frownies on my forehead every night for a week which are working miracles! Keen to do what I can to not look older/more tired than I am...

I’ve got that skin type too that hates moisturiser, I use the Waitrose pure range moisturiser which is glycerin free or low. My skin hates glycerin.

Ive had acne for years and had accutane, when it came back after dh died I used Acnecide in a very thin layer and after the initial purge it’s all gone.

Oil free moisturiser. Neutrogena for the cheapie, Clinique and Kiehl’s for the “that’s quite a lot of money for a face cream”.
Use niacinamide serum from the ordinary under your cream. Will keep the oil in check.

The Cerave PM moisturiser has a light gel texture that is good for spot prone skin. Fragrance can agitate sensitive skin, which is effectively spot prone skin so avoid products with that.

You have my sympathy. Like you, I avoided moisturiser for years because they caused spots. You'd have thought I'd have grown out of zits at my age, but no.......I've found l'Occitane Immortelle or Elemis Pro Collagen Marine cream do moisturise my skin without causing breakouts, but sadly they are expensive.

I was getting hormonal spots on my chin and jawline. Since I moved to The Inkey List range, it is clear. I use the hyalaronic acid followed by the peptide moisturiser in the morning, then the retinol serum followed by the ceramides moisturiser in the evening. I use a cheap milk cleanser. I am 45 and people usually assume I am 10 years younger, so they must be working!

Sakura7 · 01/06/2024 09:14

I had the exact same problem and Cerave has worked wonders for me. The SA cleanser in the morning (don't use this more than once a day) and the PM moisturiser both morning and night.

It has honestly transformed my skin.

Floofydawg · 01/06/2024 09:43

Cerave is the best thing ever. I switched from Clinique and have saved a fortune. Their foaming cleanser is also great.

Have you tried tretinoin? It's the gold standard for ageing skin and has years of research behind it. It was originally developed for acne so will clear spots too. It's prescription only so you'd need to get it from an online dermatology site like Dermatica or Skin and Me. It's made a huge difference to my skin. It's glowy and I never have any spots and I think has really helped my fine lines. It's not the easiest product to use though so you really need to up your moisturising products during the day. I layer lots of Korean toners and serums with ceramide and my skin has never looked better!

La roche posay. So here is my routine that I follow:
Morning:
Using micellar water to wash your face,
Cerave cleanser,
Garnier spf
Evening:
La roche posay moisturizer,
Tretinoin (0.1) from skinorac
Sebamed clear facial gel
