Do you plan your outfit

I’ve fallen into a rut of just wearing joggers, t shirts, basically anything comfy. I’ve gained a lot of weight and non of my clothes fit me and haven’t since having my daughter a few years ago. I want to fall back in love with getting dressed. Is the trick to this planning ahead? I just wondered, does anyone else plan ahead, does it help?

sounds like it’s not a question of planning OP

you need to buy yourself some new clothes!

Start by folding and putting away anything that doesn’t fit so you aren’t looking at it everyday. Then out of the clothes that are left have a play around and try and come up with some nice outfits and hang them up together so they are easy to see and put on in the morning.
Work out what clothing would be really useful to buy such as a white short sleeve top would look nice with this and this or a beige pair of trousers would be really handy. Then if you can afford it buy some key items.

Buy some clothes that fit from Vinted and Charity shops and choose pieces that you get excited about and can plan outfits around.

I started with something rather counter-intuitive

I stopped caring about Whether Things Go, and just put on some socks out of the drawer.

After a few days I realised I was really enjoying the different patterns of the socks - and suddenly I was taking an interest in clothes again.

I do plan for my work days, and non-work days it depend on what I’m doing.

that said, a tip I got on here a whole ago is spend some time over some evenings/afternoons trying clothes on that you already own - firstly you may be surprised what does actually fit, but try things together, so you know these three tops work under this pair of dungerees/pinafore dress. That shirt looks good with these two pairs of trousers but not this skirt etc.

then you might see gaps, like you have a pair of jeans that are really flattering but could do with a couple of long sleeved tops to wear with them, or you have these 3 dresses that look good, but could do with a cardie or casual jacket to wear over them.

Not plan so much but I always have two outfits hanging on the back of my bedroom door, washed, ironed and ready to go for the days when I can't be bothered! One casual like knitted loungewear and one smarter going out, so shirt and jeans or wide legs and a top, in the summer a linen dress and a broderie anglais shirt. I just found that some days I would stall getting ready because I couldn't pick an outfit - now there's always something I can throw on.

I plan my week's clothes on a Sunday and hang them together ready.

I plan and put clothes out the night before, for work days, even down to bra, knickers and makeup, the same if l have something arranged on a non work day.

Apart from the coldest winter months and when I’m doing the garden l tend to live in dresses.

I have a friend who always looks effortlessly stylish!
It has come to light recently that she has a notebook where she writes down her outfits, even to the point of which jewellery to wear with what!

This also involves trying on sessions at home to put the outfits together to write in the book, there is also a record of what she wore for what!

While this is obviously her hobby and at the extreme end of outfit planning - she always looks great compared to me who stares into the wardrobe hopelessly about 30 mins before I'm going anywhere!

I find it hard to plan this time of year - the weather is so unpredictable.

I used to live in jeans but over the last couple of years I've discovered dresses and jumpsuits. They make dressing so easy. Pull one out of the wardrobe, put a t shirt under if it's cold and then pair with boots, sandals or trainers depending on the day's agenda/weather. No planning required.

I am very organised with a very organised wardrobe but I don’t plan my outfits. I need to see how the temperature feels and also what I’m up to. But I do tend, as I’m going to bed, to think of one item, normally bottoms, as a potential starting point AND I have the luxury of leisurely mornings to play around a bit. I don’t wear the same exact outfit again.

Interestingly, casual, comfortable clothing is very on trend these days. Maybe try selecting the same colour tshirt and joggers (keep to plain versions) with some nice trainers and a long trench. Contrast with an elegant necklace. It’s really not that much effort these days to look put together than not. Gone are the days of needing heels or fitted clothes or lots of make up.
