Best designers or companies for Mother of the Groom dresses. So many out there are just scams. Let me know

Jolie Moi. I have, no lie, 17 of their dresses! 🙈

steamedisbest · 25/05/2024 16:31

why not just look at shops like coast etc?

Weirdle · 25/05/2024 16:34

But there is absolutely no need to look for an ‘official’ MOG dress! (Likely to be the least stylish clothes anywhere because the companies that use such labels think middle aged or older women are stupid.)

Can you not just choose, according to your budget, an outfit you love and think is appropriate?

steamedisbest · 25/05/2024 16:38

i would go so far as to avoid these websites irrespective of whether they are scammers or not op

the selection will be dismal

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 25/05/2024 18:04

Agreeing with others. I wouldn't look for "mother of the...." outfits. They're grim.

If I were you I would look at Liberty, Harvey Nick's, Browns, MyTheresa, Coggles, Net-a-Porter etc, etc, search dresses and set your maximum budget. Those sites will bring up brands which you can then search on the individual websites.

If budget is not an issue I would look at Erdem or Alémais or Pauw.

An interesting wildcard choice a while back was a poster who chose an Oska dress coupled with a spectacular hat and shoes.

I’m curious, @Manama1 as to where you acquired the idea that you should shop from those dreadful sites? (Or are you shopping for someone else?)

It might be that you don’t have much access to good physical clothes shops - but you can presumably take advantage of the limitless possibilities available on the internet.

Two places worth adding to @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle‘s excellent ‘money no object’ list might be:

La Double J
Zimmermann

But there really are countless sources of stylish clothes at every price point that anyone could wear.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that

  1. You don’t have to wear a dress. Some of the chicest mothers of bride or groom I’ve seen have worn trousers with either a fabulous blouse or a jacket.

  2. If you have a less flexible budget you might find renting an outfit more exciting. The best rental places stock the most desirable contemporary designers - for a fraction of the price of buying. Other posters might have recent experience and recommendations if that interests you.

i reckon @Manama1 was doing some stealth advertising for a MofG outfit website

it rather backfired 😆

Squirrelsonthescaffolding · 26/05/2024 10:12

Scarlett and Jo are very flattering and have secret tummy support. I saw them recommended on here and have been really pleased with the ones I got. John Lewis sometimes have them on sale. Might be worth booking a personal shopper at a department store if they exist stil?? I would think many a formal dress could be made to look MOG with the right accessories. Good luck and enjoy the day!

That would be a pity, @steamedisbest - I love vicarious wedding party shopping!

I think this is partly the issue. Lots of my friends have stressed about what to wear to their children's weddings. The MOB/G specialists are mega expensive and actually only a few basic styles when you compare them, lots of variation on a similar scene. But alternatives are difficult to find such that you feel more special than a regular guest. A couple of friends found lovely outfits at Hobbs, but their styles and colours don't suit everyone.
