Natural Ginger - Box dye, which one?!

Currently have dyed hair, an auburn-ish tone maybe a level 6/7 although it’s quite light (golden) in places, the last time it was coloured, it came out patchy & it was the wrong hue, it was more red toned - especially around my crown, it looked like an artificial colour (which iI know it is) but I want to achieve a more natural looking redhead colour if that makes sense?

Theres a few ginger dyes on the shelves but not sure which ones to go for. Years & years ago, I use to use the L’Oréal Feria in Mango Copper which was nice but that’s not available anymore, besides I’m not sure about going so bold, I’m a bit older now so don’t know if being so bright would suit me.

I love the colour in the pic. What box dye do you think would get me as close as that? I don’t want to go to a salon as in my experience (they cost too much) I’m never happy with the results to be honest!

What colour is your natural hair colour?

seeyouyesterday · 24/05/2024 17:27

LoreleiG - that’s the thing, I’m naturally red! Just been colouring my hair a lot over the years & want to go back to my natural colour which is pretty much like the pic. It’s crazy there are so many variations in the hues and unfortunately I have one of those complexions that only suit one or two so getting it right is proving to be a right pain!

That looks like 7/43 to me although looks like it' not a flat colour but highlights and lowlights. Although the overall tone is 7/43 in Wella or L'oreal

Fellow old ginger
I think you have to go less ginger and more golden brown as time goes by or you end up like lilo lil from Bread.

Oh I see! I am too so was wondering. I am having the same dilemma but haven’t dyed my hair since my twenties. I want to but want it to look like my old colour not my now colour. Or like my now colour but less washed out.

Old ginger here too! I use L'Oreal Casting Creme 734 (Rich Honey Blonde) which may be a little less coppery than your example, but it's the closest I could find to my natural colour. I can't go any darker than a 7-something, because it looks too 'dyed' if you know what I mean. HTH.

I have a similar natural ginger/ auburn hair colour which has been greying for the past decade (at least). After a few years of expensive salon colouring and never being particularly happy with the results, I started using Casting Creme Gloss in Amber which I think is pretty much the shade you're looking for.

It's semi-permanent so it starts off a bit darker and then gradually washes out. I use it about once a month and it covers most of my grey. I regularly get compliments on it - including from my hair dresser.
