Work in a busy retail environment, on my feet 8.30am-6pm with a 30 min lunch. 2 full walls of floor to ceiling windows in a small shop and it’s gets the sun the majority of the day so it gets HOT on nice days.

I’m management so dress code is “smart, no denim, no skirts/dresses”. I fit specialist footwear so spend the whole day getting up and down of the floor fitting shoes so I can’t really have anything too low cut either.

Im currently the biggest I’ve ever been (size 22) due to an ongoing health condition and I’m struggling to find clothes that I’m comfortable in.

What would you wear to look smart, be comfortable and try and not be too much of a sweaty mess by the end of the shift?

Hmm, I was always taught no sleeveless styles for business. Can you choose a light layered look?

For example, a broderie blouse with short sleeves, or elevated t-shirt with nice loose trousers?

Thanks all 😊 @DuploTrain will have a look at some of the trousers. @AmateurNoun Definitely can’t get away with sleeveless, sorry I should have mentioned that.
@mdinbc That top would definitely be classed as too casual 😔

Can you challenge the no skirts/dresses rule? I can't see why they aren't allowed (fine to have a length rule eg must be below knee) and that would give you lots more options.

Linen dark trousers and loose cotton blouse.
I’ve got them from M&S last year and they worked really well for hot days. My blouse was a really light cotton so perfect for quick washing but still formal enough.
Tu at Sainsbury’s has 25% sale atm so they might have something.

pizzaHeart · 22/05/2024 09:21

Or short sleeve linen shirt?

Dark trousers and light blouse /top (actually without buttons is better)

I only started wearing linen relatively recently and am impressed by how the fabric keeps me covered but manages to feel like wearing air. You can get some nice co-ords that will look smart with good shoes and hair, so minimal fuss. Also have a look at culottes. They don't suit everyone, I haven't found a pair for me, but there are some pretty ones out there.

Yes seems very outdated to not allow skirts

Inyourwildestdreams · 22/05/2024 12:25

@SausageRoll2020 @rollonretirementfgs I would agree that it seems quite outdated but to be fair, I spend the entire day up and down on my hands and knees fitting shoes, up and down ladders, and bending up and down doing deliveries and filling racks so skirts and dresses aren’t necessarily the most practical for the actual job 😊

Thanks all for the advice - I’ve ordered a few pairs of linen trousers before and never quite found ones that suit me but I’ll maybe take a shopping trip and see what I can find 😊 I actually have a Sainsbury’s order coming today with a few bits I’d ordered - ordered the day before the 25% 🙄😂
