Flattering basic T-shirt

GreyDuck · 21/05/2024 08:51

Help please finding a basic T-shirt that can be a staple in my wardrobe.
I'd like plain solid colours, no fussy sleeves as I want to be able to layer it.
I'm pear-shaped 12 on top, 14 hips. My tum unfortunately sticks out further than my chest.
The seasalt trengrouse looks good on me, but I'm after something more casual in a jersey material that doesn't need ironing.

I bought a couple of these and they’re super flattering. I sized down from a 12 to a 10 which fits well. They’re a lovely weight, 100% cotton and flattering shoulder/sleeve (imo).

I like allsaints or hugo t shirts.

gardenmusic · 29/05/2024 07:45

Cotswoldcollections.com
They are heavy weight, solid colours choice of neckline/sleeve length and come in normal and tunic lengths.
They are not cheap, £42, but there is a new customer discount.
BonMarche, (which I never thought I would use) have decent. plain T shirts.

T shirts are very unforgiving unless you are slim, avoid at all costs, buy a blouse or shirt that fits properly.

Unless you have big boobs and then no shirt will ever fit you…..

I agree. T-shirts from Bon Marche are really good quality.

I always find Seasalt quite good for t shirts

I find basic t shirts aren't as forgiving as they used to be and tend to wear other tops for work nowadays

GameOfJones · 29/05/2024 14:22

I actually really like Mountain Warehouse for basic t shirts. Their basic v neck works well on me (size 14) and is flattering.

My staple are Zara basic tees - usually in Black. - They do other colours!

Perfect fit for me, skimming hips without clinging and enough room for my (ample) "girls"

ASighMadeOfStone · 30/05/2024 06:05

Cos everyday t shirt (the ones at £19.99)
Arket heavyweight
Uniqlo as above, but- be warned the quality and weight of the fabric seems to vary wildly. I bought one in store, loved it, ordered the same one online- unrecognisable in terms of thickness and quality, despite being the same product.
I also agree with the poster about the Uniqlo v neck ones- I ordered a couple of those as well, and use them for cleaning up, they look like men's vest material.
M&S Autograph - last year they had some lovely colours as well as black and white. Really good quality.

I recently went on the hunt for the perfect t shirt. I tried Uniqlo, Cos and Arket.

This was the best one I tried:

https://www.arket.com/en_gbp/women/tops/product.heavyweight-t-shirt-white.1135758001.html

It's very oversized though, so it might be worth sizing down.

Another vote for this. I buy the new colours every year and also an new sparkling white one each spring. PERFECT for my 50 year old body, does not lose its shape, hides lumps and bumps. Looks great under suit jackets for my job or with jeans on the weekend

TretQueenie · 31/05/2024 09:25

I noticed the Autograph ones in M&S looked like they were very good quality. Similar to those in Cos. I’ve found the cheaper ones in M&S are very thin and shapeless. I own one from Uniqlo and seems like good quality - not worn much.

Applesonthelawn · 02/06/2024 09:37

T shirts are so tricky and I think depend on your body shape and what you like about your body. I have to have either very short sleeves, or lower than elbow, because I have very long arms and big shoulders. I can look really matronly in the wrong length sleeves, but athletic in a sleeve that is right for me. I don't care whether fitted or loose around the middle areas. This one works for me:

@RolyPolyLilBatFacedGirl which style do you get ? The heavy cotton?

RolyPolyLilBatFacedGirl · 02/06/2024 14:16

@Thisoldheartofmine I have a couple of the heavier cotton but my preference for style, fit and wear is the basic... I literally have a zillion of these in S ... https://www.zara.com/uk/en/basic-cotton-t-shirt-p03253322.html?v1=327760816&v2=2352943

Washes well and cheap as chips too at £8.99!!!

Theothername · 03/06/2024 08:21

Lots of great brands mentioned already. It’s worth looking carefully at seams when you buy for indications of how well it will hold up. In T-shirts you want to look at the collar material, the seam at the back of the neck, and the shoulder seams for reinforcement. Then look along the side seam to compare direction of fabric weave front and back which will give you an idea if the T-shirt will twist.
Price isn’t always a good indicator and these days previously good brands cut corners.

KnittedCardi · 03/06/2024 08:57

Oh I miss the old GAP. They used to do scoop neck, or vnecks, ribbed and fitted, basic ts which were so flattering. I have big boobs too, and actually need a fitted style to give me a waist. Also need a longer length to accommodate the uplift you get with said big boobs, hence ribbed being key. Crew necks are a big no as are half sleeves.

Heatherland77 · 03/06/2024 13:02

I like the Ivy t-shirts from Fat face. They are a good, soft cotton with a gentle slub in the fabric. They have decent sleeves with a rolled hem and they are a nice length, so no Winnie the Pooh midriff issues. They are currently doing a lovely rose pink one, plus a good mid blue. They do black and white as standard colours too.

Rina66 · 18/07/2024 09:07

I buy two types, a £12 looser v neck shaped skimming type to wear with leggings and tighter trousers and a £28 tighter scoop neck cap sleeve to wear with baggier jeans and wide leg trousers...love them both but they suit different outfits, also both come in lots of colours.
