curly hair shampoo

What is your favourite curly hair shampoo and conditioner.

very curly, ringlets, but short hair. It has tendency to frizz. Ideally I want a shampoo and conditioner that means I don’t need to use much (any) other products if such a miracle exists.

its for my teen son who has really curly hair and loves it. But it does tend to frizz. He likes it when the curls are well formed and not too frizzy obviously. But also hates the feel of any product in his hair.

As his hair is short and he does not need to wash it everyday I am happy to give more expensive options a go if any are great

I feel like we've tried every curly product on the market for DD (11) the one we keep going back to is Cantu

EebaDeeba · 21/05/2024 03:16

I use Cantu Clarifying Shampoo and Conditioner which is really good and not overly expensive. To tame frizz and get definition he will most likely have to use some product to lock in moisture but it doesn't have to be heavy creams, etc. those weigh my hair down. You can get lightweight gels to define curls and help hold their shape. Those don't tend to leave any kind of residue on the hair once scrunched out. Loads of people rate Umberto Gianni Curl Jelly. I prefer Inecto Natural Curl Club which again, isn't costly.

Another vote for cantu here my child has short curly hair

DarlingCoffee · 21/05/2024 03:59

We use Aussie Curls shampoo and live in conditioner which seems to work well. Also added bonus of it smelling great too

AnnaMagnani · 21/05/2024 04:10

Shampoo not nearly as important as conditioner- curly hair needs loads of moisture.

I've not really got a favourite but I only use curly hair brands.

itsgettingweird · 21/05/2024 04:11

Also use cantu.

All the others make my hair greasy quite quickly

CrissCrossAppleSauce · 21/05/2024 05:02

Oh cool thank you. Cantu looks like we should give it a go!

Any other tips welcome.

I am the straightest finest haired person in the world so curly hair is a whole new world

Aveda. The ‘be curly’ range is superlative.

AnnaMagnani · 21/05/2024 05:06

I'd suggest finding a curly hair blogger on YouTube/Tiktok/Instagram with similar hair to him. There are loads of people doing this.

Basics would be no brushing, fingers or wide tooth comb only, dry naturally or with diffuser and a vast amount of conditioner.

It's much easier to use brands for curly hair and there are loads on line.

Cantu is the only consistent one for me too. Leave in conditioner.

After washing and rinsing I put a little on my hands and rub into soaking wet hair, allowing it to drip through. Then scrunch dry and allow to dry naturally.

CrissCrossAppleSauce · 21/05/2024 05:31

He already watches a few YouTubers for hair tips. So he is on top of the basics. No brushing, air dry or using a microfibre towel. Not washing too often - but obviously with sport it does need a wash.

With the conditioner do you use both a rinse out conditioner and then a leave in and then some curl cream( or gel whatever) or no rinse out, or no leave in?

It's totally down to his hair and his preferences. And how good his product of choice is.

To be really frizz free my impression is that you have to be OK with your hair feeling a bit producty.

I don't like that and also usually can't be bothered. I just use a leave in but have done every combination over the years.

NothankyouNigel · 21/05/2024 05:44

I rate As I Am co wash and find I don’t need a rinse out conditioner afterwards as it’s so conditioning. I then use either a tiny bit of leave-in or a curl crème and Umberto jelly to style. And once every week to 10 days a clarifying shampoo.

marriednotdead · 21/05/2024 05:51

I have fine frizz prone curls and follow the standard methods for curls mentioned. I use Palmers olive oil shampoo, conditioner and leave in conditioning spray which can be found in many large supermarkets or black hair shops.
The game changer is Sebastian whipped crème mousse which I buy in bulk online. It’s light and doesn’t add any crunch or stickiness at all. It’s not cheap but a little goes a long way.

CrissCrossAppleSauce · 21/05/2024 05:52

Awesome, I will have a look at those recommendations too.

this is probably what he is aiming for currently, and I’d say his hair is about this length and similar curl pattern. I feel like there is no way to have such defined curls without some product, but just need to find the least sticky or crunchy

the second pic is where he is hoping to go length wise I think, again I think you’d definitely need product to maintain this look

I find mousse much better/easier for controlling frizz than cremes and gels, which can feel very claggy. Raking through some Frizz Ease curl mousse when wet, you can just leave it in and go. Gives hold, reduces frizz and doesn't feel too producty, can still run fingers through your hair.

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 21/05/2024 06:31

I use Aussie Curl shampoo and conditioner, I also wash every day and use a brush. A comb would not go through my hair nor would my fingers and I'd rather get rid of the knots.

I also use Shock waves mousse for curly hair but also depending on humidity I'll use a serum beforehand. Occasionally I'll use a cream such as the Aussie one instead of mousse. I also never use heat to dry it.

My curls are nice, defined ringlets even with the fact I do everything you're told not to do with curly hair.

The key is a good haircut though, after mine has been cut it's always the curliest and the curls spring back.

stayathomer · 21/05/2024 06:34

For me the shea moisture range or Aussie (but I want to try cantu too!!)

HandsDown84 · 21/05/2024 06:57

I'm actually enjoying using Tresemme 0% at the moment! The Curl Hydration range.
