I was in London this weekend and saw plenty of women wearing heels.

And?

TheChosenTwo · 20/05/2024 21:53

Ok 😂

Passthepinotquickly · 20/05/2024 21:57

Probably because on MN you see that Londoners are super casual all the time, a lot of us are, but same as everywhere, some people dress up, some dress casual

Thelondonone · 20/05/2024 21:57

They were tourists (from t’north-I’m northern).

Bridge and Tunnel Brigade?

For sure @grownupjobrequired.

A few women insist on wearing them because they love them. A few more women start wearing them because they don't want to look 'less'. And then more women wear them because they feel they have to...
and something so stupid, uncomfortable and ludicrous is back in fashion.

Tourists/visitors, mostly, I imagine

Bridge and Tunnel Brigade?

Not familiar with this phrase for parts of London - which bridge, or indeed, tunnel are you referring too?

grownupjobrequired · 20/05/2024 22:03

It's a NY expression that I am applying for London.
Those who live commutable distance: who have come Up West for the night.

JeysusH · 20/05/2024 22:04

@Weareoutofwine, 'Bridge and tunnel' is referring to an old thread where a poster called out of towners in London 'Bridge and tunnel', which any fule kno is not relevant to London.

Said poster was roundly ridiculed.

Incorrect.

Most tourists and visitors I see out and about (I am a Londoner) wear trainers. I wear sandals myself 😃

Titsywoo · 20/05/2024 22:07

For nights out? I'm sure there are. I mean probably older women (35 plus) as younger women seem to wear flats more nowadays but I'm sure there are some younger women who wear heels. There are some dresses that just don't suit a flat shoe or trainers.

SkaneTos · 20/05/2024 22:07

I don't wear heels, because I can't walk in heels.
But I think heels can look very good!

I have a question though, I think the high-heeled shoes I have seen lately have been slightly lower than before? Not low heels, but a bit lower. Is that a thing now? Heels, but lower?

PoppingTomorrow · 20/05/2024 22:09

JeysusH · 20/05/2024 22:05

Incorrect.

OK cool. Whereabouts was this so we all know where we can wear our heels?

Thanks, I was quite confused trying to work it out.

Anyway... I travel a fair bit with work and have noticed block heels and wedges making a bit of a come back all over the place. But not so much stilettos and alike (phew).

CassandraProphesying · 20/05/2024 22:11

When I lived in E1/2/3, variously, and worked in EC, variously, for about 15 years I always happily teetered around in heels cos it took about 20 mins to easily get home, or less in a cab obvs. But once I moved out t’country, nope, no way, not happening. A two+ hour journey via multiple trains, planes and automobiles meant I fully embraced not just flats but ‘comfy trainers. Yeah, I bet all them in heels ARE locals.

I often see bunches of young women in spindly heels on the tube of a Friday/Saturday evening.

Is Bridge and Tunnel a euphemism for Sarf of the River?

Not really. Bridge and tunnel technically refers to NYC where to get to Manhattan, you have to cross a bridge or go under a tunnel. It's a short hand for people from the suburbs who come into the city for dinner/theatre/a night out but who don't live in the city.

I thought it was a euphemism for a lady boy type 😳

Yes, I know, it was a joke, because we literally have to use bridges and tunnels to go Up West.

mynameiscalypso · 20/05/2024 22:18

@ViscountessMelbourne Apologies! But a lot of people don't seem to have heard the phrase before when I thought it was fairly well known.

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 20/05/2024 22:19

I wore heels out on saturday thinking it was a posh/dressy do but nearly everyone else had trainers on! Oh well l know for next time
