I have a small Kipling back pack which is not really big enough and I have a long haul flight coming up. It needs to fit under the seat in front and be flexible, not rigid, something more like a traditional backpack than a suitcase. Lots of zip up pockets would be useful. It needs to hold a small soft hand bag with makeup, tissues, sunglasses etc, tablet, cardigan, food, water bottle, book etc, Just stuff for the journey, no clothes. Possibly something like the Trespass Albus, but I'm wondering what the quality is like for that price. But I don't want something stupidly expensive that will only be used a few times a year. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

I have the Sydney from here and that could work pretty well. The other might work too. miatui.com/collections/backpacks

I also have cabin max from Amazon, just be mindful of the airline specifications, I normally upgrade with Ryanair so have the 30l rucksack, but if you choose not to upgrade and have the standard ticket with Ryanair it covers only a 20l rucksack despite both fitting comfortably under seats. On my last flight with Ryanair, loads were fined for exceeding bag allowances!

We’ve got CabinMax Metz bags (they do specific EasyJet and RyanAir sizes) and I also have a CabinZero 28l bag for EasyJet flights.

The CabinMax ones have more zippy pockets but I prefer the material of the CabinZero bag.

Both have compression straps, which I think you need as soft bags tend to bulge.

Definitely check the airline baggage allowance dimensions.

If you’re not taking clothes then 30l is overkill. I backpack (including, admittedly small, camping gear) with 30l if only 1 night and someone can share the kit.

I would look for 15 - 20l ish. I carry a laptop, and most of the things you describe (laptop not iPad and no makeup bag) in a 15l bag to work everyday and I could fit a makeup bag in too. Loads of options. I like the Osprey Tempest but may not be in budget or aesthetic.

Ah, I missed the ‘no clothes’ bit in the OP.

I would think the Trespass one would do the job if it’s not going to get much use, or Berghaus and Lowe Alpine daypacks are decent.

I love my Nordace Sienna

AuntieDolly · 20/05/2024 08:25

We've had some nice backpacks from American Tourister. You can sometimes get them cheaper from TKMaxx

BeyondMyWits · 20/05/2024 08:29

Also have the Nordace Sienna. Soo much room in such a compact space. Like a tardis. Fit under the seat on our Ryanair European flight last month.

Roka bags are fab.

I have the travel hack backpack, I think it's also made by cabin Max.
I love it and it's perfect for under the seats.

I know you said it's not for holding clothes but if you are putting your other luggage in the hold I'd recommend putting at least a change of outfit and some underwear in your carry on just in case.

Thank you to all who replied. Some great suggestions there. I will have a look in some outdoor shops later this week.
