Is everyone really using this much sunscreen?

I have a 200ml bottle of sun cream from Boots. It says apply every 1-2 hours and one bottle contains 6 applications for the average person.

So by these instructions, you would need to replace bottles every few days?? If reapplying just once a day, that's only 3 days? So you would need 10 bottles a month in the summer?

It's the same for facial sunscreen, reapply 1-2 hours and they say apply two whole finger's worth of product to the face.

Is everyone buying and applying this much sunscreen I usually get one bottle for the body and it lasts the whole summer! how long does a bottle last you?

I only use sunscreen if I'm sitting out in the sun or will be out walking in the sun for a long period of time, and this is only in the summer months or on holiday

Abracadabra12 · 17/05/2024 16:16

I would assume they meant six applications when you're on the beach in swimwear - in that situation I don't think a 200ml bottle every few days is unreasonable

Aquamarine1029 · 17/05/2024 16:17

Are you outside all day?

Chypre · 17/05/2024 16:21

I am using "this much" only if I am on a very sunny tropical holiday and on a proper mission to tan. Otherwise I think my hooded raincoat provides enough protection from the UV rays, you know.... (THAT WEATHER!!!!!!)

Paninaro94 · 17/05/2024 16:22

Those instructions are for if you’re out in the sun all day, for example on holiday.

I put SPF on in the morning and only reapply if I am going to be out in direct sunlight.

Precipice · 17/05/2024 16:30

Depending on how much I'm out. I think a bottle lasts anywhere between a week and two-and-a-half. Some days I only go out briefly (or indeed, not at all), so then I only apply it once. Otherwise, I reapply - maybe after about 2.5-3 hours?

When I was in a Med. country in June (v. high UV), I had one of those P20 tubes an Ambre Solaire (the AS is 200, I'm not sure of the P20, but probably the same); I think the AS was already open but the P20 was new. I was there for 10 days and ran out of body sunscreen, so I had to use facial sunscreen on the body on the last day (expensive!). Then, I was out for most of the day (excepting two days when I had work stuff all-day).

I'm sure I'm not applying it as often as I should, but I buy a new 50 spf bottle each yr. I apply it to arms, shoulders, chest neck and back of neck upper back area, and legs after a morning shower. My face make up has an spf of 40, if I'm not wearing makeup then I put the 50 on my face, but I'm always under a sun hat. I never get through a bottle. I don't go on holidays that require more than this.

OddBoots · 17/05/2024 17:13

I think it would be 6 applications for a whole body - I only have about 20% of my body exposed so it would last me 30 applications.

Heelworkhero · 17/05/2024 17:21

I’ve had bottles last 2 years or more!! Once I have a bit of colour, I use it very sparingly.

xyz111 · 17/05/2024 17:23

We go on holiday next week, 2 adults one primary school child. I've got 7 bottles!! But I apply loads on holiday as I'm really conscious about my skin.

heyhohello · 17/05/2024 17:51

It's why I apply the ultra long lasting stuff - can last pretty much all day. You just apply as instructions and there is a chart with how long it lasts with regards to the uv protection. Anything else just doesn't seem worth the money.

NahNeedsGarlic · 17/05/2024 18:49

Around two years. I only wear it in the height of summer when I’m going to be outside for prolonged periods. And I prefer being in the bar shade anyway.

Caspianberg · 17/05/2024 19:03

God no. We live in a southern med country and don’t use that much. We also don’t walk around naked 24/7, so usually it’s just face and arms majority of the time.
I prefer to stay in shade where possible, avoid midday sun, wear a wide hat

Seaside3 · 17/05/2024 20:53

No, i wear it when I'm somewhere like the pool or beach, or without shade. But mostly i prefer to wear leas and sit out of direct sun, or cover places like my shoulders that might burn.

buffyslayer · 17/05/2024 21:47

Not in the U.K. no as I'm usually not in a bikini so using less as parts of my body are covered
Abroad I would probably go through that much, it is a generous amount to get the protection
