What are you wearing in the gym?

I have just joined a gym with a view to getting fit for the first time in a long time! I dug out all my old workout clothes and I don’t fit in some of them and I would look daft in a lot of them (crop tops and shorts!) I am now in my 50s and want comfortable and practical.

Any particular workout gear or brands you can recommend? I have black Nike trainers I am happy with. I am looking for tops and leggings and maybe a hoody/jacket and a bag.

Sports direct. Leggings, vest, crop top, etc. It depends on what workout you're doing, if i'm doing weights then I wear leggings and a free fitting top, one to move around in lift weights etc and if I'm doing cardio then I just wear whatever, leggings, joggers, hoodie, tshirt etc. Once you get going and get into the swing of it, you'll eventually not really care and just wear what works for you, so don't go buying lots of expensive gym gear

Get yourself a good protein shake, too

I’ve also just recently rejoined a gym. I’ve noticed styles have definitely changed. A lot of the women seem to wear tight shorts and crop tops or really baggy joggers/hoodies. Might just be where I am. I’m lucky in that my old stuff still fits, it does look a bit dated now but I’m only at the gym so I don’t really care.

Clothes, otherwise my body sticks to everything.

Sorry! I am planning on getting back into the gym. I was planning on leggings and dh's running tshirts and they are loose and airy. He gets quite a few from Decathalon. They are much more comfortable than before I switched to them and used to wear womens' gym tops.

I love M&S Good move sports wear . I've tried almost all of them and they're the ones I come back to . Good price and quality.

Beatrixslobber · 17/05/2024 13:43

I wear leggings and either a cropped vest or a T-shirt depending on what’s clean and how comfy I feel.

I like Myprotein, Bo and Tee and gymshark. Leggings wise you can’t beat myprotein imo.

I also prefer slightly looser top - mens over womens (womens are very shaped and small for some reason). Cotton and breathable. You want to feel comfortable and not wear anything you feel self conscious in. Lulu lemon have very good quality leggings.

Bear in mind lululemon sizing is American!

Start with a decent sports bra! I've got Sweaty Betty and GoodMove leggings, with some loose Gapfit vests for weights and BAM tops for yoga - they've got a band round the bottom that stops them falling over your head when you're in a downward dog.

SillySausageSandwich · 17/05/2024 14:08

I’m a regular gym go-er.

I go for:

Gymshark training leggings in black, blue, darker greens. I’ve tried sweaty betty legging and they just don’t fit me. And I like H&M leggings but I’m 5ft tall and they tend to be too long. I will not wear leggings which risk showing my butt!

If it’s hot, I wear some Nike 2in1 shorts, or cropped leggings.

On top… usually H&M top or a fitted high neck gymshark top. I don’t wear crop tops. I don’t like baggy because it flops around as I move.

And a zip up shock absorber bra! Then I can escape the thing easily… and I have boobs so I can’t get away with low support.

I go for comfort over anything else…. If you feel good, you’ll look good 😊

Another M&S Good Move fan. I've gotten trousers from there that are kind of leggings but slightly looser. I'm not comfortable in leggings anymore, I feel too old for them

TorturedPoets · 17/05/2024 14:17

Good point about the sports bra! I had a great one but it might not fit any more. Thanks for all the recommendations as there are brands there I don’t know so I will take a look.

Leggings and a gym top, second hand. In my gym people just wear what they want.

AnotherFuckingUsername · 17/05/2024 23:55

Echo secondhand suggestion - you're likely to change body shape and potentially gear you bought for day 1 will be too loose a couple of months down the line. I'd suggest go second hand, get the lie of the land - what you're comfortable with, ideas from
observing others then buying new gear later into your journey (a reward of some kind?).

PragmaticDramatic · 18/05/2024 18:09

I thing the thing to get new is a sports bra, the rest you’ll be able to find second hand.

sweetnessandlighter · 18/05/2024 18:12

I like Sweaty Betty. The Power leggings are peerless in my view, really great for strength training in particular.

Cheesymonster · 18/05/2024 18:22

I have one gym outfit 🤣 I just wash it every time. It’s from matalan, black crop leggings and a loose black shirt and a sports bra. Very cheap. At my gym the women seem to wear baggy t shirts, bum scrunch cycle shorts and long white Nike socks with trainers. Some wear converse high tops. Anything goes really, which I think is great. I am 48 and don’t give a crap about fashion but I do keep meaning to buy something a tad more colourful. Will take a look at m and s.
