Capsule Travel Wardrobe - Autumn UK

We live in Australia and are coming home in Autumn for a month, Sep/Oct. I'd like to start putting together a nice capsule wardrobe that will look good whatever the weather.
I find Aussie style very different to UK, I have a corporate job but our office wear is very different to the UK (no sleeves, tailored shorts, high hemlines - are all accepted) but because of that my wardrobe is corporate, Lululemon and very light summer clothes - not much in between.
I have a classic accessories, really nice trench, classic boots and white trainers, some basic merino knits, white shirts, wide leg pants - but no jeans! I'm an 8-10, like classic styles & cuts. Any ideas, do I don't look like a tourist in my own country 🤣

What do you plan on doing for when you are here is it a holiday or a work trip or hybrid?

What type acrivities and where are you staying?

How long are you here for?

Oh and how much luggage do you have! Business or economy?

I love a packing thread!

We have plenty of luggage, loads of sightseeing, walking, socialising / dinners.
We are in remote Scotland, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Midlands and London.

I think what you’ve got is fine style wise, classic is always “in”. The question is warmth especially for Scotland / Manchester

I’d be packing jeans, jumpers, trainers and a warm coat or jacket for those places in autumn.

Wide leg jeans are everywhere right now but there’s plenty of people wearing slim/straight/other styles. Wide legs aren’t that practical for sightseeing especially in the wet. Cropped/ankle length with boots and thick socks was a thing last autumn/winter.

Jumpers in the shops at the moment tend to be cropped or oversized. Fair bit of batwing or balloon sleeve about. But again, normal classic jumper is also fine. So your merinos may be fine if warm enough.

Coatwise it might be worth getting one of those lightweight puffer gilets and you can wear it under your trench for warmth?

Bring a brolly …

If you want shopping recommendations, I'm a big fan of some of the jeans from Queen The Label (based in Australia). Not sure how much stock they have at the moment as they're moving premises, but worth it to keep checking back.

You'll need layers, waterproof coat, jumpers and you'll be fine.

I have a north face down vest, I only have a very light waterproof under armour running jacket - not stylish.
I left a Barbour padded jacket with my sister, she might still have it?!

Don’t know about Scotland, but October can still be quite warm in Manchester. You certainly won’t need merino wool and warm coats. Jeans, trainers, lightweight layers and a waterproof jacket will be fine. I’ve usually switched to long sleeves by then, but only just.

Have a look at wears my money on insta . She has great ideas.

It's mainly warmish during the day (sweater and light jacket) and chillier night

I'd go for

2 jeans maybe wide and skinny (skinny are practical to wear with boots and thick socks over the top of wet and cold )
Some long sleeved t shirts
Some short sleeved t shirts
Sweat shirt
Dress or two for evening with boots and tights and trench
Nice top to go with jeans
Shacket
Then some more casual stuff for outdoors or relaxing

I'd pick plain and classic colours - grey black and wine is what I like - in tops and shacket in grey and sweatshirt in grey also.

thedendrochronologist · 18/05/2024 18:08

I'd also add a light hooded coat. I have great North face one from their fashion range not technical. I layer it up with a sweater and it's warm enough for the autumn.

People vary! I live down south and I’m in woollens and jeans for 8-9 months a year. I get cold easily, if OP is used to Aus she might too.

I'd rather be a bit too warm than too cold, so I'd bring:

Uniqlo ultra light down compact vest to layer over a jumper, and under a coat
thermal vest
mini backpack (if going on hikes)
leather gloves
and (not the prettiest but very cosy) Primark fur lined leggings

Other bits:
a nice scarf
sunglasses
earrings (to dress up the evening outfits)
