Problems with summer dresses in the shops right now

I've been trying to find some nice summer dresses to buy. I'm a size 12, mid/late 30s.

I'm struggling find any that suit me and that I'm comfortable wearing.

Main issues are:

  • Many are wrap dresses and don't feel secure, especially when it's windy
  • I would like a waist line where my waist actually is - and I can't find dresses like this
  • Dresses seem to either cling in all the wrong places, or the opposite and they drown me.

Anyone else having issues with summer dresses?

Very disappointed. Nothing for those of us who are e cup + (still mourning the loss of pepperberry) as dresses seem to be shapeless, and yes too long, I'm 5'6 hardly short and they are long

olderbutwiser · 14/05/2024 17:53

Those shirred dresses look like the ones mum and I could knock up in an evening out of an old sheet.

The head of women's wear at M&S told the design team to scrap bust darts as they are "frumpy" needless to say she was a flat chested type - I'm not and on me darts are necessary to stop clothes hanging off my boobs......

FloofyBird · 14/05/2024 18:02

This is partly why I've started to learn to sew my own clothes this year. I can never find anything I like, hate it when things are see through or polyester. I can choose the neckline, where the waist sits and the fabric.

FloofyBird · 14/05/2024 18:05

Oh and I can put pockets in everything!

That really fucks me off.

Like I read a piece of shite article about cleavages being out of fashion, as if tits are something we choose in the morning. Or years ago the Guardian told me you could only be a cool girl if you had straight hair like Kate Moss.

Dahliasinallotment · 14/05/2024 18:13

Puff sleeves.

I have broad shoulders and they make me look like a rugby prop.

I hate black too, I like grey, but never wear black

Why are so many things made of viscose nowadays? I see some really lovely blouses, dresses etc but all made of viscose! I’ve found, in the past, viscose is impossible to wash! It always shrinks no matter what I do - low temp machine/low temp hand wash, it always shrinks!

Things are made of viscose/polyester and other synthetic fabrics these days because they are cheap.

ABirdsEyeView · 14/05/2024 18:45

I've literally just sent back a dress from M&S because it had no chest darts, just giant armholes that gape. I'm currently wearing a cheap t shirt that was the same cut as the dress I just sent back - if a supermarket can manage to make it with non gaping arm holes, bloody M&S can too!

I like this Poetry summer dress
£££ I know but if you want well made natural fibres it’s going to cost more than fast fashion .

M&S do a linen range that look as good at that, at a better price, too!

Viscose has improved a lot,it’s better mixed with other fibres ( although I once had a pair of cropped trousers that would have fitted a10 year old after a wash) and you can get away with not ironing, after a short spin and a shake, it’s fine. It’s breathable too.

Well that’s your opinion I was actually responding to the original post they are a size 12, but I think it’s unfair to limit more curvaceous body shapes, celebrate your curves and wear what you want Ladies!!

I have curves, and I wouldn’t want to bend over in that dress!

PrimalLass · 14/05/2024 19:06

I got a nice black linen-ish maxi dress in Primark for £18! It had good plain sleeves but does have a tiered skirt (I like them).

Anuggetofpurestgreen · 14/05/2024 19:07

Boden have started putting the waistline of dresses horizontally across the middle of your boobs. No bra is going to hoist high enough.
Spaghetti straps ruin any dress. Why can't they just make the straps wide enough to conceal your bra.
I just want a plain white or cream dress for my hols without any weird added bits and that is not see through. It's not like I'm asking for the moon.
Slightly off topic...looking for a nightie today in M and S that you can wear on hols and not scare people by the material being so thin you can see your boobs outlined. I thought I'd found the perfect one in slightly thicker cotton. BUT NO...they've actually done broderie anglais all over it and placed holes right over your nipples!!

Flossieskeeper · 14/05/2024 00:31

I’m 5’5. All dresses seem to be made for 6’ Swedish women.

Yep

Foxblue · 14/05/2024 19:11

I just want to know where to get non frumpy stuff.
'Wrap and v necks for big boobs'
They are always cut in non stretch fabrics, and are too shallow and high so make you look frumpy!
If I was made Prime Minister tomorrow I'd probably make it illegal to make a wrap dress in a non stretch fabric. Happy to die on this hill.

River Island HAS got some pretty stuff in at the moment (in amongst some absolute horrors, as is their way) but the clothes are actually much nicer in person - their website photography doesn't do some pieces justice at all.

Also why is everything beige.

I also wish clothes sites had a button that you could click to say 'I love this dress, it's perfect for me, if you make it in more colours that aren't fucking beige or giant black&white floral prints which flatter no one, I will buy one in every colour

Magpiecomplex · 14/05/2024 19:22

emsyj37 · 14/05/2024 13:39

I have bought loads of summer dresses from Sugarhill last year and this. They are surprisingly flattering and fit nicely, but they are patterned which may not be to everyone's tastes. I like the patterns and bright colours.

I bought a Sugarhill dress recently. Size 20 to go round my boobs and the pattern cutter clearly thinks women get taller in proportion to getting bigger around as it's a good 6 inches longer on me than it is in the pictures on the website. I'm 5'7" so I don't think the model was really 6'1".

ThomasineMay · 14/05/2024 19:23

Personally I love wrap dresses so that's fine by me, but I'm sick of brands that used to make their dresses out of cotton swapping to viscose instead 😩

Ass roughing?? 🤔

Ruching 😳 autocunt strikes again!

FaeryRing · 14/05/2024 19:31

Yes I’m so sick of the Bavarian Milkmaid look! Stupid puffed sleeves, immature ‘ditsy’ prints, everything an awkward midi length and waistless.

I think they had an autocorrect go wrong and meant ruching which is that intention bunching look!

Here's a ruched dress

User284732 · 14/05/2024 19:37

Those that find dressed too long, have you tried sizing down? I'm 5ft 3, size 14 trousers, 16-18 tops but a 12 in dresses fit perfectly. All the gaping/ill fit issues disappeared when I tried smaller sizes. Primark of all places have got some great 100% cotton mini dresses that are a great length without puff sleeves.
