How can I get my hair more cool toned?

I get bleach highlights with a brown lowlight. I keep asking my hairdresser to please make my hair cool toned but it always ends up yellow with bits that are too warm. It's really hard to tell if these bits are the brown she puts in or the highlights , I tried to ask her but she wasn't very clear. Her answer is usually that I should have a toner on top when it's washed off at the basin but I went for this once only for it to cost me £20 and wash straight out pretty much immediately.

I use a blue mask conditioner which does help to add an ash tone and combat some of the yellow but I feel like it can't really do enough and it's the bleach or lowlights that need to change? I know my hair is hard to lift and she puts me under a heater to help this. I wish my highlights were whiter and my lowlights more ashy and cool but I don't know if this is achievable?

I have cool toned skin (I think, judge for yourselves from the bits you can see 😂) and blue eyes and feel like cooler toned hair would suit me more, and also blend into my greying roots better.

I've attached pics of my hair and one of the type of colour I would like to achieve. What do you think?

I have the same issue, and just came on to say it is possible to achieve a more ashy blonde at the hairdresser. I changed salon as I'd been asking for a while and had the whole 'toner is the answer' conversation. Toner does nothing for my hair, washes out immediately, so I was getting tired of being told this was the answer, and tired of having yellow hair in between hairdresser visits.

I went to a hairdresser who uses the more old fashion way of colouring, you know when they bring over that board with little curls of dyed hair on it and you can choose? And we managed to find a cool toned highlight and lowlight that works in my hair. Maybe changing salon to one that does this might work for you?

U just need a good toner ! And refusing one won’t help when hair is lifted it reveals warmth and to bleach to 10’or above is super bad for the hair !
have a toner and use good products to keep hair nice colour wow do a filter spray that gets rid of those brassy build ups from hard water ect that can discolour hair as well
DO NOT over use purple shampoos these darken the hair x

See that's what I think about the toner in the salon, it just darkens the hair?

I've used purple shampoo and conditioner today so I hope it hasn't darkened my hair too much. It's still wet so I don't know yet!

If the toner is making hair dark it’s to ashy or they dropping a level question them !!! Ash doesn’t shine or reflect the light adding gold will with the ash

Or maybe they haven’t lifted to a level 9 or above x

I'm having this issue. Almost identical to you.

I loved how she did it the time before but this time it is yellow. She was banging on about some family trauma and not concentrating but this is what she did wrong:

The lowlights were too coppery. They need to be brown. A warmish brown maybe but not copper.

The bleach was washed off too soon - before it went white blonde.

My hair looks awful so I've dyed over it with a 9A ash blonde dye and it looks waaay better.

Here is what my hair looks like now after using purple shampoo and conditioner. Definitely not darker, I'm happy that my highlights look brighter but it's also made the supposedly cool light brown lowlights look even more warm!

I'm going to have to have a conversation with her about the low lights. Will a salon toner cool down these lowlights or do I need a different shade? I'm annoyed about them because they weren't supposed to be lighter than my natural colour but they obviously are!

I would have a chat and if things dont change find a new hairdresser the thing with low lights depending on what she is using they will fade over time and that means warmth will rear it’s ugly head u cud try a toner with some blue in it that would keep the blonde bright but cud help tone the warmth in the lowlights I don’t recommend blue shampoos there a waste of money .
im a hairdresser and I do my own hair because I literally struggling to find someone that knows there colours lol ! So for non hairdresser clients I actually feel for u all x x x x

@SnoqualmieRiver would you be prepared to post a picture of your hair after the dye? I'm really tempted, but it sounds terrifying Grin

It would be good to see what it look like. Thanks
