Another body shape one - pic included

I took some before pics today (starting new exercise regime 💪🏻) and realised I don’t know what my body shape actually is.

I carry my weight on my upper thighs and bum mostly, so maybe pear, except my shoulders are a tiny bit broader than hips. So maybe inverted triangle except I don’t think the difference is that extreme? So maybe rectangle except I have a small and defined waist (best feature). So maybe hourglass except I don’t think the difference between waist and hips is wide enough…so no idea basically. All I know is that im not apple!

You are you shaped. And that's the right shape for you to be. The clothes you like the look and are most comfortable are the ones which are the ideal ones for you to wear. 🙂

I don't think any of us are fruit or geometric shapes or time measuring equipment. We are human beings.

heyhohello · 13/05/2024 13:07

Enjoy your new exercise regime!!!

BusyMintCrab · 13/05/2024 13:10

You look v similar to me - I think of myself as a slim hourglass/slim pear as I’m widest at my hips although not by much.

I think if you do measurements it might help more?

Bodyshapehelp · 13/05/2024 13:10

Thank you @heyhohello! You are completely right of course.

Still interested in outside opinions on how I do fit into these random arbitrary categories though…but maybe the answer is I don’t.

The clothes I tend to wear are basically shapeless sacks as (familiar story) I’ve lost all confidence and sense of style since having kids. I’d love to get it back though hence the exercise!

Thank you…I think my shoulders are a tiny bit wider than hips but not much.

Need to buy myself a tape measure!

Look up Kibbe body types also - I think they are more helpful in terms of what clothes will look best on you compared to the usual apple, pear etc.

botemp · 13/05/2024 13:23

You have a pretty balanced body, closest to a neat hourglass but not quite a stereotypical hourglass so dress advice for that type probably wouldn't be all that useful.

Tbh when you're at the lower end of the weight scale for your height the whole body type classification has less use. You're much better off looking at where things fit. So on you it appears the distance between waist and crotch is long and your shoulders while quite straight sit slightly low so your upper body can appear shorter so if you want to follow the body types dress ideas of achieving balance, you'd avoid wearing things that emphasize short waistedness and look for things that elongate the upper body.

Bodyshapehelp · 13/05/2024 13:40

Thank you @botemp that is really useful - had never considered impact of shoulder height/position before.

Yes, do try learning about Kibbe.

HazelWicker · 13/05/2024 13:44

I'd say pear.

Wow this is fascinating - had never heard of it before. I think based on the quiz I’ve just done I’m a “dramatic classic” which is basically quite balanced but says that it will turn into pear if I gain weight, which I think is pretty accurate.

This is the website I looked at if anyone else is interested:

HazelWicker · 13/05/2024 13:44

I'd say pear.

I agree - a slim conference pear, not the rounder chunkier one!

You have a lovely athletic shape with a long trunk and could wear almost anything - please stop with the shapeless sacks Smile

peppermintrock · 13/05/2024 14:27

You're not an hourglass. A hint of a waist does not equal an hourglass. I would say you are a pear, but a more athletic pear.

Bodyshapehelp · 13/05/2024 14:32

For the people saying pear - isn’t the defining feature of pear shape hips that are wider than shoulders? My hips are narrower than my shoulders 🤷🏼‍♀️

If pear just means fat thighs then yeah I’m a pear!

OP posts:
Ispywithmylittlepie · 13/05/2024 14:36

I'm inverted triangle which becomes more pronounced with exercise. I've tried to put the book i am reading next to your pic and there is a slight taper between shoulders and hips. So you are possibly a bit like me?
I gain weight on stomach and thighs.

ScrapeMyArse · 13/05/2024 15:02

Hmm I have a similar frame (although bigger bust and not as slim ).

I am technically an hourglass. Even without the bust I would say I was because of my shoulders. My skeleton is hourglass because it goes wide shoulders, narrow ribs, wide hips , narrow ankles. My weight distribution means I'm not an exaggerated hourglass and perhaps that's the same for you?

The other thing is your photo is front on. Hip measurement also takes into account the front to back as well, and arse size, so a front on image isn't showing the whole shape if that makes sense?

I think we get confused about what some hourglass bodies look like because not all women have lots of soft flesh covering their frames. They may be slim like the OP or very muscled. Also a lot of clothes are designed to ape an exaggerated hourglass shape (eg peplums, body con with black side panels, shorts with bum padding etc)

Although I firmly believe in wearing whatever you want, I have to admit it did help when I realised what shape I was. I spent my youth not realising that I had a small waist because trousers were always low rise.

botemp · 13/05/2024 15:07

It's not an exact science and a lot of different people will have different interpretations resulting in different classification systems.

For me, a stereotypical pear has a noticeable difference between hips and waist (there's a ratio number floating somewhere, I want to say something like 0.75 or something) with slim shoulders. Quite a few of the classification systems look at bust measurement rather than (or over) shoulders which makes sense to a point of describing a female body and its most prominent features. However, since most people look this up because of clothes, shoulders seem more important to me as that's where clothes tend to hang from and are designed around, much more so than your bust measurement (ideally clothes would take more interest in designing around the bust but that's not the reality).

There are tonnes of variables, we haven't even gotten into anterior pelvic tilts and the like. The whole body shape thing can be a useful guide, but it really shouldn't be treated like an instruction manual.

Floisme · 13/05/2024 15:35

I don't know what your shape is called and I was never sure what mine was either (but probably some kind of pear).

What I do know is that, assuming the thighs in the photo are yours, then they are not fat and, if you really believe they are, then I'd be careful about getting too hung up over body shaped dressing, especially when you say your confidence is already low. I know it has many fans on this board but, when I followed it, I became obsessed with my thighs, upper arms and jawline, and fell into quite a negative mindset.

HaPPy8 · 13/05/2024 15:46

I would say hourglass. You have a great figure.

peppermintrock · 13/05/2024 17:11

Hourglass proportions are typically 36-24-36, or similar - the waist is much smaller than the hips and bust.

Justsomethoughts · 13/05/2024 17:25

OP I suspect people are saying pear shape because you are wearing a top that sits towards the base of your neck - almost like a halter neck - is it a racer back? This makes your top half look smaller than your lower half.
you look more like a rectangle shape to me as (although your waist does go in) your top, middle and lower half are all roughly in line. I think Cameron Diaz’s shape looks similar to you.

ISeeTrees · 13/05/2024 17:46

When I saw your photo I thought your body shape looks similar to mine and I'm never sure what I am either!

I just did the quiz and got exactly the same as you- dramatic classic- if you find anything interesting on things that suit our shape please do share! And of course I will too.

Also mostly in shapeless sacks 😬 I don't quite have a "waist" to show off and even despite the warm weather I'm not ready to get my legs and shoulders out.

Agiftandacurse · 13/05/2024 19:05

Definitely pear.

Bodyshapehelp · 13/05/2024 21:13

Interesting @ISeeTrees! From what I read it seems that essentially classic = balanced, which I think I basically am. And I don’t think the traditional shapes really have a version of that.

Also noted re not obsessing over size etc. I’m a 12 now and was a 10 pre kids so would like to get back to that if poss hence the new exercise regime - will be interested to see how if anything my shape changes when I tone up a bit more.

This is a side on pic though it leaves me none the wiser!
