Sandals/trainers for a hot city break with lots of walking

Looking for some comfortable shoes to take on a city break which will involve a fair amount of walking. I'd like some comfortable sandals AND some comfortable trainers and both ideally that would look OK with dresses (so nothing too clumpy). I've heard good things about Sketchers but looking at the website, there are so many options! Any advice please?

Fitflop are super comfy and even come with a mild sparkle so can go from walking to the evening.

Another vote for merrells. I have a tan leather pair that go with anything and look great. I walked miles and miles in mine last year and even paddle in the sea in them and they have just come out again for this year

Which ones do you have? I have an old pair of Merrels that are discontinued which I am gutted about as they are so comfortable and look smart for wearing out with a dress. I wish they'd bring them back.

It sounds like I'm the only one but I usually have to go down half a size in sketchers.

Do you know I bought some the other day from an outlet store and thought they sized up big but I did buy my normal size.

Skechers are comfortable but not always great if you need ankle stability (eg from sole support that doesn't budge) as the memory foam squishes.

Merrell are good, and so are Teva

Another vote for the Josef Siebel ones posted above. Just returned from 6 days in Lisbon averaging 20000 steps a day. Worn throughout from new. So comfy. They look nice too.

I have Brooks road running trainers and Merrell sandals.

Bought them a few years ago, they have lasted and are very comfortable!

I think it's best to get them fitted at an outdoor store for maximum comfort!

I have a pair of Hotter Tourist sandals which are brilliant for walking in, I'm actually on my second pair. I have very soft skin on my feet (unstealthy boast), so blisters and chafing can be a real problem when my feet get hot, but I've never had rubbing or discomfort of any sort in these.

They're not fashionable, but I wear them with dresses and they look right i.e., they're not velcro and rubber 'active' style.

I wouldn't go for sketchers, although they feel lovely and soft they don't have much actual support. I bought a pair of sketchers go walk, they were lovely for commuting and for the airport day of my holiday but gave me plantar fascitis when I wore them sightseeing in Rome.

My Birkenstocks are my shoe of choice for warm weather sightseeing. Much more supportive. I would recommend fitflops if you want something more cushioned than birkenstocks. Alternatively go for proper hiking trainers like merrels or keen.

I walked 20,000 steps in these in London in the heat last month. I actually ended up buying them because my trainers had rubbed, and the foam sole was such a relief! There are multiple colours.

@SKYBLUEPINKQ can you put those in a washing machine? Just curious about cleaning the fabric.

Sandals and trainers for walking are my specialist subject - I’ve tried so many

Skechers are insanely comfortable but not really enough support for me.
Merrell are too narrow. They are adjustable but there’s always a strap that isn’t and it’s always the one that needs to be.
Hotter tourist are very good indeed and they don’t look too ‘utility’ for dressier occasions.
Crocs did some leather trainers years ago that were amazing. Nothing similar at the moment sadly.

The holy grail for me are fitflop uberknit trainers (not much use in rain) and Teva original or hurricane sandals.

edit - Birkenstock Arizonas as well

LittleMonks11 · 20/05/2024 08:37

Tevas and Skechers - can't go wrong. You get what you pay for with these and they last. My wet water Tevas lasted 20 years. I had some dry land leather ones latest just as long. I now have a new pair!

LittleMonks11 · 20/05/2024 08:38

I wouldn't recommend Saltwater sandals for walking as they are very flat. Nice for just popping to the beach.

tillytomtiny · 20/05/2024 17:12

I asked a similar question recently as we're heading to DLP this summer, OP - comfy sandals and trainers are a must. Teva and Skechers won for the highest recommendations but I've also got my eyes on these that I spotted recently... 👀
