Hair Mascara for Greys

What’s the best hair mascara to cover greys around the hairline? I am naturally quite dark, so the wiry greys really stand out.

The L’Oréal one is probably the best but it’s not amazing. It does change the texture of your hair where you paint it on but it didn’t budge. The spray in version gives a bit of a ‘not rubbed in’ dry shampoo feel which don’t like either. remember reading an article once about how the French cover those greys in between colouring and they buy a semi permanent, mix a tiny amount of it and paint it on their hairline for 20 mins prior to washing, I started doing that in between dyes with Castings… a box can last me 3 or four months, takes about 2 mins to mix up and it’s been brilliant for me.

@Iloveyoubut thank you. That’s a really good idea.

@bingohandjob thank you. I don’t think this would work for my concern, as I have single strands of grey in the hairline, especially the side boards.

I prefer the colour sprays- like John Freida.

Bristolchick · 15/05/2024 08:37

I couldn't bring my colour appointment forward as my greys went crazy! I bought this and thought it was great! It's more of a powder but really did cover my greys at the front and side of my headline.

Similar to the above, but a bit cheaper, this is the one I use and it works miracles!! I feel as if my hair line is moving back, especially when the whites come in it's really noticeable, but this stuff really covers it up and I look and feel so much better.

I use "Cover your Gray" which I got off Amazon, in the dark brown colour. It got me through my first trimester of not wanting to dye my hair for several months, but also having to go to the office and attend meetings. I asked a colleague if she could tell and she said no - she's not normally the kind to say things like that just to be nice I like to think it worked quite well?! It does sort of matt your hair down a bit but I have frizzy hairs on top so I quite liked that aspect. I will definitely keep using it to space out hair appointments a bit more! Personally I didn't get on with sprays for my hairline because I seem to aim badly and end up with patches on my skin and not enough where I want it.

I'm so pleased I found you say this. I was actually just searching to see if anyone does this.

Can I ask how long between appointments do you go and then how long do you wait until you apply a semi permanent hair dye?

I had this idea but was worried it wouldn't wash out and my hairdresser would know 😂

flotsomandjetsome · 29/05/2024 19:09

Brown eye shadow applied with a brush covers my grey roots in the last couple of weeks before I get the colour re-done.

I thought it was bonkers when the hairdresser suggested it, but it works a treat!

Thanks. For me, it’s not the roots. It’s individual strands (mostly in the hairline), so I need to do from root to tip without colouring my skin in.

Great idea @Iloveyoubut do you mix up the whole hair dye bottle and use it bit by bit or do you pour a tiny bit into a dish and use it bit by bit. The box hair dye I usually use has a snap off lid for one of the tubes so I might have to mix mine all in one go and hope it lasts!

KeeeeeepDancing · 05/06/2024 23:32

No don't mix it all up! Get a little dish and pour some out into it to mix and apply

Alisonjayne8 · 06/06/2024 12:34

Will it not go off though once its been opened? @KeeeeeepDancing

Sablecat · 06/06/2024 23:32

It should be all right as long as they are not mixed. You cannot mix and keep. It just becomes ineffective. If they could sell it as a single mixed bottle they would but that's just not how the chemicals work.

You need to work out the ratios if you're doing small batches. If it's 100ml of activator, and 100 ml of colour, then you can mix say two tablespoons of activator and two tablespoons of colour.

No they are strong chemicals. A bit of air won't make them go off. Follow what the previous poster described
