Why is Marks & Spencer so obsessed with women wearing waistcoats?

I do not like waistcoats, I can’t see them without thinking of Suzie Quattro.

The new ones are awful. The fabrics look cheap. The colours are grim and you have to have pretty good arms for them to look anything less than hideous.

Stop with the waistcoats.

By the way everyone - if it's annoying you that every time anyone mentions Marcs & Sponsors their post is auto-edited to hold a clickable URL link to that website, please come over to this thread to add your voice to asking MNHQ to turn off this new feature

Thanks for the people who have come onto the thread to tell me not to buy one.

point of the thread is to discuss how awful they are and how yes I’m not going to buy one because they are awful.

Thanks for your input.

But they aren't objectively awful. You just don't like them or feel good in them. Shops are not just catering to you 😂
Do you want shops to stop with the short shorts or sleeveless tops just because you don't like those either?

OP come and live where I am. I don't think I've seen any for sale, nor seen anyone wearing one. It's never crossed my mind to wear one. I was in the aforementioned store yesterday and didn't see any but maybe my mind blocked them out. I don't even remember them from the 90s. Maybe I've got some sort of waistcoat-blindness.

The fashion for them at the moment seems to be to wear them very tailored with very little underneath.

It works for women who are quite toned looking I think but certainly I would look ridiculous in them with flabby spotty arms and 36F norks trying to bust (ha) their way out through the arm holes.

as pp have said it is the trend. I got a nice one in C&A (not in UK) a few weeks ago.

But. People should wear the clothes that fit their shape. If you put a waistcoat (or anything else on) and your chest is trying to escape either by popping buttons or through the armholes - then either you need a bigger size, or you need a different style, surely?

That is dressing 101

I love waistcoats!
They look very stylish- happy that they are so popular now.

Just don't get one;)

boredybored · 08/05/2024 18:02

It's not just M and s . They are everywhere . It's called fashion. If you don't like it don't buy them 🤷‍♀️

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 08/05/2024 18:16

I have several and love the fact they’re in fashion. I avoid the Breton top like the plague.

mdinbc · 08/05/2024 20:38

They are not quite as popular here (Canada west coast) but I did buy one last year. Unfortunately it was cut quite low in front, so needed a vest top or button up shirt underneath.

I'd love a linen one for summer, but agree some of the fabrics are not the best in some fast-fashion shops.

BigBurrata · 08/05/2024 20:48

I like waistcoats - I think of them as summer jackets.

Tinymrscollings · 09/05/2024 09:08

If you want an actual answer to your question OP, I’d assume they’re obsessed with selling us waistcoats because there’s money to be made. They love a micro trend because we’ll all dust off our waistcoats in May 2025 and wonder why on earth we’d want to wear them, put them in the charity bag and go back to Marks and Spencer to buy whatever they’re telling us we absolutely must have for that summer. I don’t think there’s much money in selling us a nice summer top that we’ll get out and enjoy for 5 years. I like that people are starting to tire of being told we should all be wearing certain items in order to pass muster.

It’s not a trend I’ll be joining in with, but I don’t necessarily agree with what others are saying about it only being for people with toned arms, no boobs etc. You aren’t obliged to wear them in the way that the influencers tell you to wear them. If I was going to wear one I think I’d wear it open over something rather than as a top in and of itself.

Betsylee · 07/07/2024 15:51

I personally am not keen on waistcoats at all and do not like the current fad to wear them on their own. On social media everyone seems to be wearing them and hopefully by next year they will be a thing of the past.
I find them to masculine tbh but that's just me, many people modelling them look good in them if thats what they like abd they obviously do, but I can't stand them!
All the shops are promoting them to get rid of them before the autumn clothes come in, this always happens this time of year.

TheExclusiveSandwich · 07/07/2024 15:51

Bet they’re all in the sale
