A women's shirt brand named With Nothing Underneath???

FluentTaupeMaker · 03/05/2024 10:16

I'm in search for some work appropriate dress shirts and I keep seeing this brand called With Nothing Underneath on IG. I kinda like the look of their shirts but I have never heard of them. Any opinions/experience would be helpful.🙏

I'm 31, non-busty and I usually wear size 12. I work in finance and my office is on the conservative side of spectrum. Others have suggested blouses before but I still prefer the look of dress/formal shirts.

BTW these are the two shirts I'm interested in right now, any help would be much appreciated: https://www.withnothingunderneath.com/products/the-boyfriend-contrast-poplin-steel-blue?variant=39776450150463

The Boyfriend Contrast: Poplin, Steel Blue

The shirt you’ll wear as often with jeans on the weekend as you will with tailored trousers to the office.

Raving reviews on Trust pilot, the only negative was about shipping from Germany to the UK ( a return)

Thanks! Another question, do you like their fabric and fitting tho?

I've got a shirt from WNU. Their quality is very good and the sizing guidance/reviews helped me order correctly.

They have a shop in London and I think some branches of Selfridges stock them.

Oh yes I do plan to visit their store in London in the upcoming weeks. Now it really sounds like I have been living under a rock and this brand is more well-known than I thought.

Never bought myself but I’m fairly sure they’re often featured on the style pages of The Times /Sunday Times …

Looking at the website - I would generally expect to pay a bit more for a beautifully tailored shirt in really good cotton (because everything has gone up) so either they’re a bargain or they’re slightly cutting corners. Consider the quality of fabric, width of placket (if any), length and construction of cuff, stitching, side seams, how the back is cut, finishing of seams inside …

Shirts I’ve had from here are superb and get better with time and laundering. A bit addictive so I’m sorry they seem to be decreasing the number of women’s items.

I generally don’t love the MH colours, and they’re cut for individuality rather than conservative-ness, but for a comparison of quality:

Another comparison - slightly more louche:

https://www.massimoalba.com/en-uk/collections/women-shirts

(In the past, in another century, when I was starting out in a City profession, one began with Pinks shirts and progressed to Turnbull & Asser (‘Ladies’) as your fees, or overdraft, increased. No idea about their current output, if any.)

GinJarRogers · 03/05/2024 12:13

I have a few WNU shirts and they’re lovely. Hoping to get a linen one for summer.

Thanks for the help! By Pinks you mean Thomas Pink right? They still produces women's shirts as I just checked.

Budd is on the expensive side, not sure if their quality&design warrants such a steep price.

Massimo Alba is okay but I usually prefer a more structured look.

However, MH just looks awful and screams laziness.

Last time I looked at the Pinks site they had a much smaller variety of shapes and fabrics and seemed to have lost all their original design impetus. Inevitable, I suppose.

Budd are absolutely worth whatever they charge. 😍 (Though catching a sale is always good.) I have some of the Bailey & Budd cotton shirts, haven’t tried the others. When I die I’ll be wearing their pyjamas in Heaven …

Massimo Alba - yes, it’s a very relaxed look.

Harsh on the MH! Everything is fascinatingly carefully sourced and made and very desirable when you see it in person. But it doesn’t appeal to, or suit, everyone.

It's true that women's dress shirts are losing favor these days. Really hate it tho🙁

I ordered some shirts from WNU. The cut didn't suit me, so I returned them, but the quality seemed good.

What was their cut like?

It was too broad in the shoulders for me. I like a boyfriend cut, but I have narrow shoulders, so it can't be too wide, or the bit where the top meets the arm (there is probably a technical sewing term for this..) hits at the wrong spot, and the shirt doesn't hang right.

It would probably be fine if you had average or above width shoulders.

The sizing has me at a 6 when I'm usually an 8-10. Would that be correct? Are they big made?

I prefer Marie Marot to WNU. Though they ship from France.

Aside from the collar width, what other differences do they have?

I have two WNU shirts and would like to buy more. I wear mine all the time and find them well made, easy to wear/flattering and also easy to keep looking good (low ironing).

I think both of mine are in the classic cut and agree with the comments above about wide shoulders and slightly boxy shape. I have narrow shoulders and a long back and thought I'd send the first shirt back (poplin, classic cut I think) as it didn't seem to be right for my shape at all. But I hung on to it and have found the cut works really well with wide leg and high wasted trouser shapes (which i wear a lot of). I tend to wear my shirts unbuttoned with a top underneath though - the shape doesn't work so well for me buttoned or tucked in as I have such a long back.

The only way to find out if you will like them is to order one but I can certainly vouch for quality (relative to price point anyway - the Budd shirts do look gorgeous but are way beyond my means).

I buy the Thomas Mason fabric, which is better quality. I also prefer some of the MM designs.
