Really waterproof lightweight hiking jacket

Any recommendations? I'm willing to spend a reasonable amount if it's both genuinely waterproof & will last.

I'll use it for hiking & general wear, and I run hot so want something not too heavy as likely it'll spend a lot of time in my bag. Everyone raves about Paramo I know, & I've looked at this but from what I can find online I think it's quite heavy?

Not pretty, but the classic flexothane jackets are totally waterproof for hours and hours.

Sadik · 02/05/2024 20:30

Are they breathable @Flowersonmyorchid ? And any particular recommendations for brands?

Flexothane Waterproof Jacket - Size S-XXL https://amzn.eu/d/5yNyNlQ

I have this one. No, the compromise for being totally waterproof is that it's not breathable (but that does make it great in the wind). I get around this by sizing up (they are generous anyway) to allow a bit of a breeze. As I said before, not pretty, but very effective!

I have a Mikeno from TNF. Is a weird soft fabric like material and totally waterproof.

About £70 from the outlet.

I’ve got my eye on a Finisterre Stormbird

Sadik · 04/05/2024 10:07

Finisterre's a good thought, I hadn't looked at them. Everything (all 4 items Grin) I've ever bought from there has been great & I wear & wear, but the most recent was pre-covid, & I'm not 100% sure their quality is quite as good as it used to be?

I've had a look @dotdotdotdash & gone for the Stormbird, it looks like it ticks all my boxes (fingers crossed). All the negative reviews are that it's no good if you're curvy, so it sounds like it should be shaped just right for me! Also like the green colour :)

I have this one from Millets, and it's great. Withstands even the heaviest downpours.

If I want proper waterproofing I always look for 20k waterproofing and taped seams.

You’ll be warm and dry, AND stylish @Sadik!

I've an Arcteryx one which is several years old now and still looks like new.

I had a paramo . It lasted about 3 years and when the waterproofing went it went in weeks and it wouldn't re proof.
At the other end of the scale I got one from Weird Fish which was great, only leaked once and that was in really heavy rain being driven sideways and that was only down the zip.

I have this . It's brilliant. It's super light weight. On wet but warm days I just wear this with a t shirt. However I also wear it over a soft shell or quilted jacket on cooler days.
I've had a few paramo jackets over the years for different activities and they are also brilliant
