The art of walking in high heels

ItsFreedomBabyYeah · 02/05/2024 00:32

This is a call, ladies (and anyone else who dons heels).

Help a girl out. I find myself in the situation where I have to frock up and attend a ball. Now, I love a beautiful ball gown as much as the next wannabe princess, however I CANNOT walk in heels!

Any tips or advice? Do I suck it up and just 'practice'? How do y'all walk in them? I teeter around like a deer learning to walk and it is not a good look. Why can't I walk in heels???

I'd be wary about striding out even in block heels/platforms for the first time at an event with both dancing and alcohol and a long dress. Your centre of balance is different and you have to adjust the whole way you walk. Glittery low block heels might be a safer bet.

You can practice walking in heels with a shopping trolley if you don't mind looking a bit of a wally in Tesco...

If you are on TikTok type in how to walk with heels and there's loads of tips from models etc. Apparently there's an art to it and most people do it wrong, my friend swears it's true and finds it easier after trying their tips.

Can you remember what everyone was wearing on their feet at the last social event you went to? No one will care what shoes you wear, and if they do then that's their problem.

If you get heels you will feel good for a few minutes, but anxious and like a galumphing heffer everytime you have to walk anywhere. Your toes will get all mashed after standing up for a few minutes, and you'll probably end up taking them off while you are eating, and going barefoot on the way home. Forget trying to dance in them. You will have spent a wodge of money on shoes that you will only wear once.

Get some low heels or nice flats.

Heels do add something to a formal outfit but there is more of a trend for flats these days for any occasion so some pointed metallic flats would work too. Pointed helps lengthen the legs.

WeightoftheWorld · 02/05/2024 10:53

I'd just wear nice flats if you don't want to wear heels surely.

HolidayAtNight · 02/05/2024 11:26

Low heels are much more comfortable, up to about 7.5cm. Improving your ankle strength and balance by standing on each leg a few times a day will help, just in general life too.

I've got a lovely glittery / ball appropriate jumpsuit which has long / wide trousers and I wear glittery Vans with it!

JaneJeffer · 02/05/2024 11:33

Indeed I am very surprised by that statistic @Maybethisyearornext

NoraLuka · 02/05/2024 11:34

There’s a lot more nice flats around now, you could probably find some that work with your dress. I wonder if heels are in the process of properly going out of fashion like Victorian corsets, or if they’ll be back?

ItsFreedomBabyYeah · 02/05/2024 11:51

Thanks for all your suggestions! This is my first ever ball. It is a floor length gown, but I've actually just had it hemmed as it was far too long, so now you will see my shoes. I like the idea of sparkly flats.

Put your weight into your bottom and heels rather than into the balls of your feet, to do this you need to tilt your pelvis forward a bit.

Maybethisyearornext · 02/05/2024 00:36

Dont do it. Its stupid to impede yourself for the titillation of men. And dangerous and damaging, and costs the NHS million. And looks pathetic.

This is pretty unpleasant to call women who wear heels pathetic. And bollocks is it just for the titillation of men. I hardly ever wear heels btw. If you want to point out that heels can damage your body why do you need to include insults? It undermines your argument.

Fourleafclovers · 23/07/2024 22:58

Sorry but heels take practice..start low and build confidence..don’t be tempted to go too high too soon. Most importantly that must fit and if you are wide footed don’t be tempted with anything with a pointed toe box..go for a nice open sandal. There are lots of tutorials online but the best advice is that your heel tip touches the ground first..NOT the toes..this will help your posture and your balance …and practice practice practice.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 23/07/2024 23:12

If the ballgown is floor length then there is absolutely no need to wear heels. I wore trainers on my wedding day.
