Choice of wedding guest dresses

Hi 🙂 I have two weddings to attend in late summer and am torn between two dresses. (Totally different casts at each wedding, so thankfully I don’t need to shell out for two different ones!) Both weddings are in country hotels, so formal-ish without being stately home level.

This is choice one:

I love the design and unusual colour. The length would be good on me too as I’m tall - anything too short makes me look like I’m wearing a tunic and forgot to put my leggings on 😁 However, it’s viscose - which I wouldn’t mind, but it feels like a lot to pay for that (although I do get a discount at JLP so won’t be paying full price).

Choice two is this. I love it and, even better, it’s silk. It’s also really top end of budget even with the discount, but I’m trying to justify it based on the fact that I’ll be wearing it to two weddings:

Which would you pick? I’m dark-haired and am a large 12/small 14.

The second one is absolutely beautiful, honestly buy it now

the first one is very expensive for what is basically a wrap dress and you get 10-a-penny on silk Fred

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 01/05/2024 18:31

The first one is one of my least favourite style of dresses. I don't like that frilly wrap over, dropped hem look where you can see the unlined inside back of the dress. It looks really cheap. And on top of that it's got angel (? is that what they are called?) sleeves. Really don't like them.

The second one is better. It's not something I would buy but it's far nicer than the first. It's all subjective but I think the first one is awful.

Doseofreality · 01/05/2024 18:33

The second one definitely.

pilates · 01/05/2024 18:33

The second one is stunning

Shoemadlady · 01/05/2024 18:34

I prefer the first one, I think dressed up will look great especially if it's a summer wedding x

Cyclingforcake · 01/05/2024 18:35

Second. It’s gorgeous. And ignore the ‘too white’ crowd who will no doubt be along in a bit. No one would mistake it for a wedding dress.

Coconutter24 · 01/05/2024 18:36

Definitely the second dress. The first one looks like a slinky dressing gown

Chewbecca · 01/05/2024 18:36

I'm not keen on the hemline of the first dress, or the colour which isn't flattering on many people (though you may be one?).
The silk dress is beautiful.

Chewbecca · 01/05/2024 18:37

Are you a JL 'member'? Can you also use the JL members' week discount in conjunction with your discount? Another £30 on spend over £200.

FadedRed · 01/05/2024 18:39

I didn’t vote for either because I think you should keep looking.
IMHO the first one looks like a summer dressing gown, the second is lovely but very pricey for a summer frock, even a silk one.
(Disclaimer: no-one should ever ask me for fashion advice 😄)

Scarletttulips · 01/05/2024 18:40

That’s a lot of money unless you are mother of the bride.

StillYourFavouriteRegret · 01/05/2024 18:40

The first looks messy, those big wide sleeves are so unflattering.

Second one is nicer but I don't think it's amazing for £350!

Talipesmum · 01/05/2024 18:46

They’re both v nice. I would say they’d suit quite different body shapes - the first one would suit a more curvy figure (I could wear the first one no problem) but the second one is much more tailored and neat, and I think the wearer would have to be quite slender to pull it off. I’d order both and try them on.

elevens24 · 01/05/2024 19:03

Second one is nicer but it's a bit pricey imo.

hottchocolatte · 01/05/2024 19:07

I don't like the first. I do like the second but it wouldn't suit me and I would be worried about wearing white. It is pricey but if it's in your budget then go for it.

Els1e · 01/05/2024 19:57

I prefer the second one. It’s classy and stunning.

IamaRevenant · 01/05/2024 20:00

Second one for sure! It's lovely 😍

Verite1 · 01/05/2024 20:19

I think the first one is horrible. Second one is nice. Not sure I would say £350 nice, but it’s perfectly pleasant and inoffensive.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 01/05/2024 20:26

I agree. It's not £350 nice.

Hotgirlwinter · 01/05/2024 20:31

£185 for 100% polyester? I would not be paying that.

The 2nd one seems a far better investment longer term, being a neutral colour and a more transitional shape, you could realistically be wearing that in 10 years if looked after. The first one is going to date far quicker, for that level of spend I’d want some rewear potential and 2 has way more.

Spend the extra!

OneFrenchEgg · 01/05/2024 21:10

I think there's loads of factors - am I an incidental guest who can just blend in or do I need to look amazing? Do I care that much about dressing up (yes I love it for any reason)? What's my comfortable budget?
I don't like the second one, I hate buttons like that and it looks a bit 'adult bridesmaid for a city wedding' but the first one is comfortable and weddinngy but not wow.

Flossflower · 01/05/2024 21:44

I like the second one. I think the sleeves of the first one may end up in your food.

Snowdrop90 · 01/05/2024 22:07

Love the second one 😍

Silk dress is crazy expensive but gorgeous. I do happen to think that that particular longish midi length is one of the most flattering lengths known to woman.
