I’ve recently had a promotion and want to up my work wardrobe a bit

kind of thing I wear:

  • cigarette pants, white sleeveless shirt, blazer
  • any M&S midi dress, white trainers (summer) or tights and biker boots (winter)

size 12-14, 5’ 7”, corporate finance role

any recommendations?

I think the "outfit formulas" you've just provided are a great starting point!

You need clothes you feel good in, that work well with each other, and that you'll actually wear. There's no point buying clothes that don't suit your lifestyle, preferences, style and shape.

Id suggest:

  • Pick a colour palette - maybe two neutrals that suit you and one or two accent colours.

  • Ensure you have the building blocks of a work wardrobe - whatever this means to you. Typically could include tailored trousers, t-shirts, shirts etc

  • Some "personality" pieces. I tend to use a ratio of 2 basics to 1 personality piece

  • Don't forget accessories!!! I cannot emphasise this enough. These are the key to making your outfit look styled and cohesive. Particularly with work wear they are a way of adding interest and personality. Belts, jewellery, scarves etc

  • Go for quality over quantity EVERY TIME. High quality fabrics and cuts. A small wardrobe of well cut, versatile clothing will give you so much more wear than a bloated wardrobe of things you don't feel good in and can't style. I love Arket, Everlane, COS, Massimo Dutti for basics - the difference in how I feel and look is massive compared against the days I lived in fast fashion. Doesn't have to be expensive either - I get almost all my clothes from Vinted. It's often new or nearly new and I have paid a fraction of the price.

  • Don't buy everything at once. Get some basics and some elevated, quality versions of the outfits you've told us you like wearing. Wear them, get used to them, notice how much you find yourself reaching for each item and start identifying gaps in your closet.

  • When adding to your wardrobe ask yourself "can I style this into three outfits minimum using stuff I already own?". If not, it's prob not a good investment!

  • Try to avoid trendy stuff. A few trendy pieces can be nice to incorporate but imo it's better to focus on more timeless pieces that work for YOU - that make you feel good and reflect YOUR sense of style and personality.

Hope this is helpful and keep us updated!! I love following a good style journey!

In case it's helpful here's some examples of what I like wearing to work. But as you can see it's pretty personal and my style won't be for everyone 🙂 just wanted to give examples of how I personally combine work wear classics with a bit of personality.
