Can any hairdressers out there advise on home hair dye to cover grey & old highlights?

I’m absolutely clueless. Basically I had to stop having my hair highlighted around 18 months ago due to cost of living. Since then I’ve been trying to embrace my natural colour (light-brown/dark blonde with about 40-50% grey) but I hate it (I like the brown but I hate the grey). At the minute I’ve got my natural colour to my ears then about 3 inches of horrible old brassy highlights below. It’s a right mess and it’s getting me down. I haven’t dyed my hair myself since I was a teenager, when I had a few costly disasters, but I’m at my wits end with it. Could any hairdressers out there recommend a home hair dye that won’t make the ends even more brassy and will cover up the grey? In an idea world I’d go for a Taylor Swift winter blonde look but I realise that might be asking a lot!

I think your hair looks lovely! If my greys grew out like that I’d be over the moon.

I find L'Oréal Excellence is really good.

Go for a shade lighter than your natural colour.

I have similar hair to you and I honestly wouldn't really recommend home box dyes. I've been using them on and off since lockdown and I've really regretted it and wish I left well alone. My hair has gone orange, brassy and horrible.

At the moment I'm using a semi-permanent one every few weeks (Clairol natural instincts), just until the horrible brassy mess grows out.

Then I'll let my natural grey come through and have done with it!

I recommend saving up and going to a hairdresser if you're desperate, or otherwise embracing the grey.

I've used box dyes for years, and had very good results.

I also use L'Oreal Excellence. I use the Creme Gloss. For you, I'd go for a colour in the 7s or, at most, the 6s. Maybe iced latte brown.

I find that boxed semi permanent is generally pretty forgiving to your hair. Make sure to really rub it in properly - don't just slap it on and walk away. you need to massage it onto the roots and, in your case, I'd pay a lot of attention to realy massaging it into the ends too. It's not clear how long your hair is from the picture but if it's much below shoulder length, consider buying two. The l'Oreal does go further than the cheaper supermarket ones, but i think if you really wnt to massage it in and get it absorbed, having a second one in case you need more would be helpful.

I can’t offer any advice but just wanted to say that your natural colour is stunning!
