60 years old - can anyone recommend a face cream that works?

My friend has asked for face cream for her 60th - she likes sensible presents! She's white and quite pale, I don't think her skin is bad but she thinks it's dry and would like something to give it a boost. Any recommendations? Thanks

Elemis Pro Collagen spf30 is the only thing I’ve ever used that I really think works and is worth it. It’s expensive (so a very generous and lovely present) but I now wouldn’t use anything else. I am pale and have freckles.

Thanks, I'll have a look at that

Get thee to Space NK or Selfridges and ask their advice a the Beauty concierge. What is your budget? Decent moisturiser is £80+ now.

I don't suppose a tub of Astral isn't what you're after. You don't need expensive moisturiser.

Spf50 all the time ( don’t sunbathe)
Aloe Vera
Drink Water and eat plenty fruit and veg
Aldis range is amazing

Im 57 and have only recently got a single line next to my eyes.

That’s just reminded me.
When my grandad passed away ( age 88)the doctors said his skin was like a babies
He washed and bathed in butter milk. But then he didn’t have any running water, just cows😃

And a churn @Kandalama? Grin

Yes he used one of those hand churns.
As my mum used to say she spent her childhood with one hand rocking a baby and the other churning milk 🤪

The ordinary face oil all the way, we got my mum whose just turned 70 some for her birthday and it genuinely has brightened up her skin, reduced pore size and evened things out enough that you can visibly see a difference.

Personally I’d get her a Liz Earle set because you can be sure it isn’t going to irritate her skin, it’ll look nice and it’s reasonably priced if you get the cleanser, toner and moisturiser.

I use Tret, Aldi SPF and Nivea blue tub but that’s not going to look great as a present!

I’d recommend a nice gift set from Elemis or Kiehl’s. Both brands work well but I’d say Kiehl’s midnight recovery concentrate with moisturiser over the top make a huge difference.

I’ve seen people rave about astral and Nivea on here a lot, but I just don’t get the hype. Maybe it’s because I have super dry skin but they both sit on my skin like sudocream.

Budget OP? What are you looking to spend?

Salacia · 29/04/2024 07:45

I have quite dry skin (exacerbated at the moment by pregnancy) and what’s working for me at the minute is a combination of l’occitane and caudalie. I use this as a pre-moisturiser every day then caudalie’s grape water moisturiser. Once every two-three days I use l’occitane’s aqua reotier mask (I’ve been leaving a thin layer on overnight). Not sure what your budget is but maybe you could consider looking at the pre-moisturiser or the mask as they both give that boost and could be used alongside any face cream (Nivea hydra is pretty similar to the moisturiser in the l’occitaine aqua range but much cheaper).

I’d maybe check with your friend if she’s had any trouble with brands in the past though (particularly if you’re spending a fair amount). I’ve had bad reactions to Kiehl’s and Liz Earl for example so avoid those brands as they’re too expensive to take the risk (although there’s always an element of trial and error).
