Vintage wedding dress

Hoping to get married around August 26 and I'd love a wedding dress that is off the shoulder with sleeves. Ideally a full skirt/floor length. Definitely nothing tight or fitted but open to colour!

No proper budget yet but would love to have something second hand/vintage/old.

I've googled but not seen anything I especially like yet so would love to see your suggestions!

Oh @Salacia this is as close to perfect as I've seen so far! Given what pp have said about sizing I'm not sure it would fit but at least I have a ref pic for what I'm after. Thank you!

Just to clarify, the second hand dress is more about having something with history and being less wasteful than cost.

My wedding dress was pretty similar to this, it was actually a strapless dress with a lace jacket. Maggie Sottero’s Zinaida. I was a size 18 but the dress was a 20. Thought it might help with your search.

That's exactly what I wanted. I had to compromise it's off the shoulder but no sleeves, my seamstress is adding them made from the excess fabric because I'm 5'6

mitogoshi · 30/04/2024 20:28

Also lace up back is more forgiving on sizing fyi

Rixo have done beautiful vintage style wedding dresses - their store on the kings road has on site seamstress’s doing alterations

Your ideas sound wonderful...I'm reminded of this dress and veil combo:

Have you tried this style on? If not I really recommend trying a few different styles before ordering a dress.
For my wedding, I wanted a grecian style dress, loved the style. I ordered one I loved from the States (!). It looked awful on me. Then I went to a bridal shop and ended up with a dress that I would have never picked before trying it on.

I like this idea but have only seen straps and not sleeves ???

You can buy all sorts off Etsy
..sorry to go on about Wed2B but them too
(If only for trying on)

You could combine with a sweetheart ballgown dress with lace detachable skirt (you can buy those too lol)

Pemberley

This pretty jacket combines an elegant off-the-shoulder neckline in delicate scalloped lace and exquisite floral embroidery with intricate rose motifs. It’s perfect for adding more detail and coverage to a simple dress or to create a second look.

Glad you’ve got some inspiration - re the sizing it has the measurements in the blurb, bust 42”, waist 35”, sleeve (shoulder to hem) 15”, underarm to side hem 57” if that helps?

Completely get the wanting something with history to it. I had my wedding dress designed and made for me (to a vintage style but not pattern, I vaguely based it off a Grace Kelly dress in Rear Window) but had genuine vintage jewellery and accessories. Some of it was borrowed from family, others I bought. I love thinking about the life the clothes etc have had before me!

Lots of food for thought here so thank you!

Budget wise I genuinely don't really know what dresses coat or what I'll have available to spend. Realistically though I don't think I'll want to spend thousands on a dress, specially not for just one day!

Size wise I am around an 18 so I guess an old dress will be hard to find. Is it possible to make a dress larger via a dressmaker or am I dreaming?

Having a look through some of these links I think I'm steering more towards a 80s style ball gown. Definitely an old dress rather than new

It's difficult as you would have to add extra material.

Do you know anyone who does dressmaking? You could get an old pattern.
