Any over 40's taking testosterone?

I'm over 40 and love trying out a supplement. I currently take although not regularly

Collagen

Vit D

Magnesium

Occasional multi vitamin

Creatine is the latest new thing

I'm now considering researching testosterone and interested in what the benefits are, why people take it, where they get it from etc

I had a look on NHS and it states that it's not currently licensed.

Testosterone can be used as part of HRT. In nhs that is only for loss of libido but more widely it can be used to address other symptoms such as exhaustion and loss of energy. I have been on T for a while now and find it excellent but I use an import prescribed by private GP. So it's a female dose formulation rather male dose "watered down" as it were.
It's not something to take lightly. I have regular blood tests to ensure I am within range and had an initial blood test to confirm that I was low (which I was)

Tried it for a year post meno but it didn’t really do anything for me except make me hairier. I really hated how strongly scented the gel was too and felt like everyone could smell it on me. I wanted it to improve my general cognitive ability and of course libido but didn’t notice and change so i decided it was more hassle that benefit. Still on HRT though, you will have to prise that from my cold dead hands one day as I’m not stopping that for anyone.

Yes I use as part of my HRT regime. I get it on prescription from my GP. Testosterone is usually only prescribed now as a transdermal gel as the oral is fairly toxic to the liver. If used as a gel on the skin it bypasses the liver and is absorbed straight into the bloodstream.
I use a pea sized amount every day.
My husband is on it too for low testosterone and he uses about 6 pumps of the gel daily.

Where in the body do you apply it?

Cyclingmummy1 · 29/04/2024 06:43

Same as @pharmachameleon but I've reduced the dose to twice a week, rather than every other day.

You can apply it either to your inner thighs or your stomach. I find that it does encourage hair growth.

hollyblueivy · 29/04/2024 07:03

Hair growth as in on your head, or everywhere else?

For those reporting hair growth it tends to be where it’s applied. I take it as part of HRT, prescribed by my gp.

Hair growth in the site of the application. Hence putting on buttocks or somewhere with no follicles

Any reason why it can't be applied, say, under the armpits? I'm just thinking out loud. It's hairy there anyway, and less chance of being rubbed off!

pharmachameleon · 29/04/2024 08:58

I wouldn't apply under the armpits as I apply deodorant there.

This might get more responses on the Menopause board. There are already quite a few threads on testosterone on there.

I'm in my 40s, too, and I've been looking into testosterone as well. From what I've read, it's not uncommon for guys over 40 to consider it, especially as levels start to dip around that age. Some people swear by it for increased energy and even mood improvements, but it's personal, you know?

I’d suggest chatting with your doctor first to check if it’s right for you. They can run tests to see where your levels are at. I've heard mixed things, but many guys on forums like Deuschem have shared that it helped them feel better overall. Just take it slow and make sure you're getting proper guidance!
