Walking shoes or trainer recs?

Realdeal1 · 28/04/2024 09:32

Looking for a decent pair of walking shoes or trainers for a 2hr (both ways) school run or long daytime London walks (40k steps etc).

Currently wearing bog standard dark nikes which are really comfy (but soles are now wearing away). I also have plantar fasciitis so wear special insoles.

Should I invest in walking shoes? Or any recs for trainers?

A Hoka hiking trainer with a rocker sole helps with plantar Fasciitis. They're also supremely comfortable & have space for an insole. I wear mine for long dog walks.

Your child(ren) walk an hour to school and an hour back every day, @Realdeal1?

Hehe no, we bus it there, I walk back an hour, then on pick up, it's the reverse! I do the big walk!

You walk 40k a day, every day?
20 miles a day?

High five, that's impressive.

I'd sugguest looking at some trail running trainers like Salomon or Inov8.

My sister had PF and she wears Merrell walking shoes as she's on her feet all day and if she wears anything else the PF recurrs.

I have these and they fab for long walks. Waterproof and nice grippy soles. Come in all sorts of colour ways too. Not the cheapest option but I like them so much I'm about to order a second pair.

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads 40k steps once in a while! Regularly just 15k steps daily.

I would highly recommend a gait analysis at a local hiking/running shop - running shops should be happy to do a gait analysis for walking.

For that much regular walking it’s worth investing in shoes that are exactly right for your feet (I say this as someone who also suffers with PF in one foot).

Merrells ruined my feet. I’ve found having wider trainers helps, even though my feet aren’t particularly wide. I currently have a pair of wide fit Hoka Cliftons that I wear to death.

I wear Hoka as well podiatric recommended as have crap feet... Most comfy Bondi8 .. can get widths too... Not sure they as hard wearing as walking shoes... But the hoka walking shoes too narrow for me . The shop at covent garden useful to try..
Otherwise fitflop? With the wobbleboard..

Me again! I saw the hoka queue in London yesterday so was way too long to get anything. I have a few long walks coming up and as it's sunny, I'm planning on dresses. Options are : sandals, converse (with insoles), black really comfy nikes with insoles or white Nike AF which I have never worn out! Any thoughts? Would love my converse but hate the risk of pain!

Hokas are lovely and airy and squishy and feel like a cloud but I couldn't walk miles in them - I don't find them supportive enough as I have a dodgy ankle - yet my husband runs marathons in them. I do though have a fab pair of merrils - not the big bulky ones, mine are quite light weight and they are brilliant - prefer them to my walking boots.

Rocketpants50 · 06/05/2024 08:07

Weirdly though I can though walk miles in my fitflop sandals or my teva walking sandals. Think it's the molded bottom which suits my foot!

GameOfJones · 06/05/2024 21:12

I have Plantar Fascitis and wear Skechers arch fit trainers with an insole. They have a lot of different styles..... unfortunately I think wearing converse would totally wreck my feet.

Realdeal1 · 06/05/2024 21:43

I ended up buying the hoka clifton 9 in white so will try those out for size. Unfortunately not waterproof. The waterproof ones didn't come in any plain colours. To those who have them, do you wear the specialist insoles with them too? I currently wear insoles with my Nike flyknits

Yes I wear arch support insoles as well.
My feet are never obviously sore after walking in my hokas.

Cantonet · 06/05/2024 22:32

I have these ones pictured.

Thanks realdeal1 that’s great.

Realdeal1 · 07/05/2024 10:49

@KTSl1964 I initially bought cheaper ones from ebay but this was recommended here and although bit more pricey, it really helped my feet so I bought more!
