Travel classic comfortable non frumpy clothes tall and plus size don’t want to look stand out British

Thinking ahead to travel and really don’t suit black I look too pale and ghostly. I need some comfortable practical cool to wear clothing that looks effortless but well put together and not black. So I avoid looking obviously British. I am early 50’s, tall and plus sized. Size 20-24 depending on brand so nothing that digs into my middle. Thinking maybe lightweight jacket either denim, beige, navy or pale green and very comfortable bottoms with a classic plain or plainish top unlike my usual bright colours and garish prints and comfortable footwear. Thanks

Where are you travelling to? Long haul flight or short haul?

Augustone · 27/04/2024 18:30

I know SHEIN is frowned upon but maybe something like this with a lightweight jacket?

What on earth is 'looking British'?! And even if you did 'look British', what's the issue with that? You are, presumably, British?

CarInsurance · 27/04/2024 18:33

I can recommend these as a 5ft 10 - I used them on an 18hr flight, very soft, stretchy waist and flowy enough to let air circulate https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0BNWM1JPM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&psc=1

EmmaEmerald · 27/04/2024 18:34

What does "looking British" mean?

KatyaKabanova · 27/04/2024 18:38

Yes - you'll need to clarify "looking British".
The clothes you have described are worn by hundreds of British women.
What look are you trying to avoid?

Augustone · 27/04/2024 19:36

I’m with bollockstothis on this one. On holiday last week, I noticed that some of our European counterparts seem to have a summer style which makes them look stylish and put together - not over dressed, just cool. Neutral colours and no loud prints . I followed some advice from a Mumsnet thread last year regarding colour combinations etc and it not only makes packing a whole lot easier and versatile for outfits at the other end but I felt a whole lot better too in terms of style.

KatyaKabanova · 27/04/2024 19:45

However, @Augustone , we still don't know what the OP means because she hasn't clarified it.

WhatWouldYouDo33 · 27/04/2024 19:50

I am British but grew up in a different European country. Many high street retailers here have loud prints, big floral prints and these are hard to combine and are not classics. In my home country people tend to wear mono colours and very classic cuts. brits also tend to wear very tight clothes which is not always flattering. Nobody flame me please I am not stylish myself.

I can tell brits by a mile when on holidays in my country - not saying that’s good or bad just an observation. Maybe this is what OP means? Not sure.

KatyaKabanova · 27/04/2024 19:55

It's just that I've seen a lot of British women on holiday in Sorrento and Portofino, and they dress in pale linen, chunky sandals and often a silk wrap, or those little white cotton shift dresses and carry raffia bags. I've personally not seen lots of loud prints and never wear them myself, but I suppose some women do.

WhatWouldYouDo33 · 27/04/2024 19:57

@KatyaKabanova Sorrento and Portofino! How lovely! 🥰 my last holiday got cancelled because I was very ill and now I can’t wait to get away again!
(sorry for derailing OP)

EmmaEmerald · 27/04/2024 19:58

I never do print. Not even as a kid. Fine on others, if they like it, great, not keen for myself.

what OP is looking for is how most of the women I know are dressing.

I like jewel colours but on the dark end, eg forest green. Also black but never head to toe black for me.

i don't see loud print much, if ever? I see a lot of black and grey.

How do you know they are British?
Do you ask them?

Also maybe there are British people you don't notice because their clothes don't match your stereotype.

Oh my goodness, you really must go to Portofino, it's just gorgeous!
We went to Sorrento and on to Rome because I wanted to go to the Vatican. Just an amazing holiday!

WhatWouldYouDo33 · 27/04/2024 20:08

@marcopront yeah maybe. Sorry for stereotyping.

I am from Italy and yes you usually can tell a difference. And yes I can also hear people speak 😅

KatyaKabanova · 27/04/2024 20:08

When I sat at the table next to two very elegant ladies I wasn't surprised to hear them talk English!

Some of the Italian women in Rome wore quite loud clothes with big prints, but to be honest, I thought they looked nice and colourful! They wore those colourful leather sandals as well.

baaflin · 27/04/2024 20:21

@marcopront
Agreed. We lived in Italy for over ten years. People were always very surprised that DH wasn't Italian when he opened his mouth to speak - he's from Yorkshire. Despite being fluent there's always the hint of Keith Lemon in his Italian IMO.

The bad random tattoos are often a sign

KatyaKabanova · 27/04/2024 20:25

Italy is the country with the highest proportion of people with tatoos. 48%. They love them!

Edited

Apologies I meant like this poster states (bright colours, loud and floral and or other bold prints, I need to simplify my look and dress plainer and more stylish) which is how I usually dress and anyone I encounter can automatically tell my country of origin from my clothing before I even open my mouth.

Many European women or more stylish women I know from bigger cities tend to
almost dress head to toe in expensive looking, plain black clothing year round.

Right, so you want to wear head to toe black?
You can get black linen trousers and a black linen shirt from M&S. They have different leg widths in the trousers and lengths in the shirts.
You could also get navy if you wanted a bit of variety?
Pair with some tan leather sandals from John Lewis, they have a good range.
