New short hairstyle for fine, thin hair

Sprinklechops · 27/04/2024 12:07

Approaching 40, sahm with short, fine, thinning hair. Had the same haircut for yonks, usually a chin length bob. Very very straight hair that I never do anything with.

What is in at the moment? Whenever I Google it's the same styles from when I used to Google years ago!!

I'd like something rougher and more messy, but will need some advice for styling and products too!

I fancy a change! Any ideas?

I have very thin, fine, brittle hair. Every time I fancy a change from a bunt bob, I end up growing it out asap as it needs more styling, looks straggly and thinner. I’d be interested if anyone has some good ideas too . I’m so bored with the same style, but previous attempts at anything else has been a bit of a disaster.

This is what I'm worried about! Whenever I change, I just can't get it right and I end up back here. But I'm so bored!!!

Personally I'd have extensions for thickness if not length. If you're not blessed with great hair, no matter what you do, it's only ever going to be ok, but with a bit of help could be fabulous.

There's an older influencer I follow called "Instyle with Helen" on Instagram. She has posted frequently about meno hair loss and how she's coped. She did one about giving up extensions and having a shorter cut. It did look great and my friend who is suffering a similar situation found the advice useful. Might be worth looking up?

Go shorter more a pixie cut it looks thicker

ScribblingPixie · 27/04/2024 14:47

If it's noticeably thinning, isn't it worth getting some health checks?

Rocknrollstar · 27/04/2024 14:56

Do you go to a good hairdresser? If so, they should be able to advise you. I have been told (and I know) that my hair needs to be in a bob but it is now shorter and layered at the back so it feels like a new hairstyle. My cutter has 100s of photos of hairstyles in an app on his phone.

IntriguingFactJumble · 27/04/2024 14:57

Pixie cut.

TaraT28 · 27/04/2024 16:06

Short hair adds volume for fine hair, but you need to make sure it is the right cut for your hair and face. If you try shorter, make sure you have a stylist who knows how the cut short, fine hair. I hope it works for you.

I recently went through the same thing, had had my hair longish for years so I could just tie it up when it got wet from menopause sweats. Finally found a really good hairdresser and had it cut into a pixie style. As far as styling it goes, I've never found it easier, as I always thought you put a product like mousse, on while hair was wet, and then dried it into the style. Now, I put the product on wet hair, and just rough dry it with head upside down until COMPLETELY dry, THEN style it, it holds the shape of the styling brush or whatever, so much better, and needs much less work. All done in about 5 minutes flat. Only problem is, that it needs a trim every 6 weeks minimum, but is SO worth it for how it's made me feel

If I can make it 5 weeks between cuts, I am lucky. Apart from that, shorter hair is much easier for me.

Another vote for a pixie. I have totally different hair to you, but even though I've had it fairly short for years it is very liberating having it really short, it's so easy and I don't have to think about it.

Sprinklechops · 22/05/2024 09:26

I've got a terrible cut!!! Should have just been bold and gone for a bixie or pixie! Just have something that looks like usual when she dries it, but since I've washed it, it's just a limp mess!!
Will give it some time to grow out a bit and try again!
What is it with the way hairdressers dry your hair?! I always hate it, but it definitely looks worse now!!

I can’t find anyone with that name, can you link it please?

FredsRoses · 22/05/2024 12:37

Are you using the right shampoo for your hair type OP? Are you drying it with your head upside down, and making sure it's COMPLETELY dry before trying to style it? Are you using a good hairdresser, or some little corner shop with outdated styles, and an older stylist who has got stuck in their ways?

I think maybe it's time for a change of salon, as well as a change of style. If it's still longer than a pixie, then why not go to a different salon today, tell them you've just had it cut elsewhere and are really unhappy with it, if they sit you down and talk to you about it before they start cutting, then you're in a much better place, if not, walk out. Explain to them that you would like to try a pixie, but are not sure it will suit you, and then once you've discussed it with them, if you're happy, let them go ahead, but ask them to show you how to style it, and to recommend the right products for your hair, etc?

I have very fine hair, but loads of it. It’s very deceptive, and I always warn any new hairdresser, because they don’t expect it until they start to blow dry! I’m like a Labrador, and lose loads of it every time I brush etc, but still it persists on growing!

I have mine cut very short at the back/nape of neck, graduating round to longer bob at the front to frame my squarish face. I usually slick back behind my ears. It then grows out and I end up ponytailing it until next time I cba to get myself to hairdresser.
