Pixie Cut - I don’t think it works for me anymore

Just pre-empty: of course, it’s my head and it’s does not matter what anyone really thinks. But would just like to know if anyone else found themselves in similar position?

I have petite facial features and I am generally small, so pixie cut has been my signature looks from 18 to 45, though I did grow it out long twice but never knew what to do with long thin hair. And now it’s like this…

It seems to harsh suddenly, as my face is heading slowly south with age. I looked at myself on camera in video calls, and wish I somehow looked softer, not so much face which seems to be getting bigger somehow.

Also I have started to get lots of grey hair, which I will not colour in full (hated it) but open to highlights. But you can only highlight top layers, not the undercut, and I know it will look naff.

So, would growing a bob with some highlights be the right way? I am gutted, but don’t want to be stuck in the past.

I had a pixie from 30 to 48, I was very happy with it. But as you say - face headed south and it really didn't work for me any more.

I grew it out - it's just past my shoulders and highlighted. I haven't gone grey but it's mousy, and the highlights thicken it as it's extremely fine. I do miss the pixie but it was always hard to get decent highlights in, it was far easier maintenance having it longer, and I think it looks better than short.

Just to add - I'm 54 now so have kept it long for a few years now.

Thank you. @Heliss Has your hair thinned with age? I am worried that I will spend two year in the ugly hair stage while it grows out to find that it’s see through thin and ages me even more…

Are you brave enough to upload a photo so we can help?

I've had various lengths of a pixie cut for decades but grew it out during lockdown and now keep it in a layered shoulder length style. (Instant Croyden face lift when it's in a ponytail 😉) It's thinning at the front now, which I think would look worse if worn very short. I think that a long layered bob could work well.

Just try growing it into a bob. You can always change it again if you hate it. If you have a competent stylist, they should be able to this for you or maybe just change the proportions of your current cut.

It's a bit thinning at the front but nothing dramatic. I've always had super fine hair though. I've been post-menopause for 10 years but on HRT throughout so don't think it will get suddenly much worse.

I found this as a nice selection of pixie cuts for inspiration.

The one that comes up first is what I would LIKE. My hair doesn't really agree so I have a much less spikey version, that's a bit longer around the face and softer around the ears.

Having said that, if i ever get invite to some glamourous do, I'm taking this picture to my hairdresser and asking her to use ALL THE gel to make it happen! Grin
