How long would you expect a 50 quid bag to last?

Just the title really!

Since having my little boy, I only work part time and don't spend a lot of money buying new things, but when I returned to work last August I treated myself to a new small handbag from River Island.

It's not used every day, but on average 3 or 4 days of the week (for work and maybe the odd child-free outing).

Am I being unreasonable to be disappointed that it's falling apart after less than 8 months? The silver coloured finishes have started to tarnish and the stitching has started coming away on the handle and strap, which are splitting along the edges as a result. I'm gutted that it'll only be fit for the bin soon.

Has anyone else had an experience like this?

Sounds about right I think. You use it quite a bit and it’s not real leather.

I've got bags from 20 years ago bought for 50 pounds that are still pristine

£50 20 years ago was probably the equivalent of spending around £100 today.

True! and this one was leather and mixed suede, metallic leather as well as matte (not sure if that's making sense!)

I think £50 is a lot for a river island bag. I'd rather get a better brand from somewhere like tk max

White Stuff and FatFace often have nice small leather handbags for £50 or thereabouts, and often seem to have sales too. I had one from White Stuff which lasted for ages with daily use.

I had a suede/ leather RI bag that I got at a discount owing to a Grazia discount and it was great. I only gave it away because I was t using it. It was at least eight years old, popped in the Asher when I got coffee over it. It was not a Blingy bag and had no RI branding.

River Island bags are completely over priced and bad quality.
I live in Ireland too.
Try adverts lots of bags there and almost all sellers post too.
Facebook marketplace can be good also.
Dunnes Stores "Paul Costello" bags are good quality but a bit above your price point,
I have one at least 10 years so it was worth it

ItsAllMadness24 · 27/04/2024 21:16

River Island bags are totally shite they never last my girls the school year I absolutely grudge buying them.

anon2022anon · 27/04/2024 21:39

I would try emailing customer services with some pics. I haven't heard bad things about their customer service, and £50 is not a cheap bag price to me.

The last bag I bought at this price point lasted me less than a month. This was 17 yrs ago and it was at that point I stopped buying in this price range. So my experience is that they disappointingly do fall apart quickly.
