Awful dry hair

Hi - can anyone help me with what to do with my hair? I've always had lots of hair, very thick - slightly wavy. While it has always tended towards being dry, in recent years it's been awful - I suspect due to the age I am now (peri- meno 😩)
But it's just SO SO dry. When I wash it, this is what it looks like left to air dry. I v v rarely blow dry it, usually just leave to air dry as blow drying makes it worse... never use straighteners etc (I'm v lazy about these things!) I do colour it to cover grey / but tbh not as often as I should so it's not like it's been damaged by lots of treatment, it's just so so fuzzy and dry. I look like a scare crow. I use lots of conditioner...
please help, it used to be lovely when I was younger 😢 how can I get it to look less straw like?! I don't want to hack it all off as I know it doesn't suit me 😕 but it could do with a trim, but don't think it's just that!

Looks like you need to use really moisturising products
I have really dry hair since I've had Covid and tried loads of products.
The banana hair food is my most recent one that's giving pretty good results

Raisinsandweetabix · 25/04/2024 15:59

Stop any kind of bleach. Use darker colours that seal in the hair cuticle. Bleach dries out the strand of hair making it coarser

SomethingIn · 25/04/2024 16:00

They're half price at Superdrug and they have matching shampoos and conditioners

The banana one has always been really popular but the coconut one looks good for you too

It might be worth buying a pot of pure coconut oil to give a really deep conditioning treatment too

@Raisinsandweetabix I haven't used any kind of bleach on my hair in decades. It does bleach in the sun (I'm naturally 'golden' blonde)

Have to say, one I started hrt my hair improved again no end. It took about a year though (makes sense).

GerbilsForever24 · 25/04/2024 16:06

I feel you. MIne has got as bad as that a few times in the past.

1 Use salon quality shampoo and conditioner for dry/coloured hair. I use L'Oreal Serial Expert but there are loads of good options out there.

2 Use a hair mask at least once a week. The Aussi ones are good in the high street ranges. Or splash out on a salon one. I've used Kerastase and Kiehls before.

3 Buy a really good leave in conditioner for damaged hair. I have the innolux elixir, recommended by my hairdresser, and it changed my hair when it got as bad as yours. Now I only use it once a week or less.

canyouletthedogoutplease · 25/04/2024 16:06

Try a leave in conditioner as well, and as weird as it sounds, gel before you air dry. You might find you've got more than a wave in there, The Curly Girl Method is useful for info on encouraging curl.

I have started HRT recently @NaturalBlondeYeahRight, so hoping that might help... will try the other suggestions in the mean time! Thanks 😊

I recommend Kérastase hair oil and serum and use the oil daily and the serum after each wash

SomethingIn · 25/04/2024 16:16

You can use the Garnier hair mask as either

Conditioner
Hair mask or
Leave in conditioner for as long as you like even overnight

I thought the serum was discontinued? Or maybe it's a new version. <scuttles off to check. loved this years ago>

RhymesWithHaliborange · 25/04/2024 16:20

This happened to me. It was awful and really brought me down so I decided to address it.

Here’s what worked:

  • Keratin blow dry. Essential! You can get it done for £££ in the hairdressers but do your own from Amazon is cheaper
  • christoph robine Prickly Pear Hair Repair. It’s really expensive, sorry about that but I tried everything and this is the best
  • IGK Mistress Balm. Best styling product for hair ends. Makes you hair lovely

Good luck. Menopause is a bitch. I also take the Hair supplements but I don’t think they are as effective as the above.

The purple bottle one for blondes isn’t, I get it on auto delivery from Amazon. It’s a life saver

KTSl1964 · 25/04/2024 17:10

I’d get some coconut oil and massage it in and leave on overnight.

lukelovesu · 25/04/2024 18:26

The only thing that really worked for me was keratin blow dry. Everything else didn’t really do a lot

RichTea90 · 25/04/2024 18:43

I’d recommend this:,
https://www.cultbeauty.co.uk/davines-nounou-nourishing-repair-mask/13316928.html
but instead of using it as a mask, use it as a conditioner each time you wash your hair.

try to stay away from blow drying or straightening as much as you can, but if you do use heat tools, use this before:
https://uk.davines.com/products/oi-all-in-one-milk

I have dry hair too - and both of these products really sorted my hair out.

your hair needs moisture, moisture, moisture.

You could also use a nice oil to apply to the ends to seal the ends a bit - I’d recommend one by kerastase or the olaplex oil is v good.

I use coconut oil on my hair once a week. I slap it on and sleep in one of those towel turbans and then I wash as normal in the morning. It makes my hair all swishy.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 25/04/2024 19:03

L'Oréal extraordinary oil

Squirrelsnut · 25/04/2024 19:07

Try the lamellar water conditioners. Also bond repair products.

Can you do the Keratin before getting your hair dyed at a salon?

merwave.co.uk/products/merwave-starter-kit

This is pricey but worth every penny. There's YouTube videos, a website and Facebook page

NarrowGate · 25/04/2024 19:31

Menopause and/or thyroid I reckon. Same boat.

I use a 50p size dollop of cheap silicone free conditioner (Tesco do one for £1) as a leave-in conditioner on wet hair and then scrunch dry. Smoothes the hair and brings out a few waves too.
