First ever festival! What do I wear?!

Help! I'm going to my first festival next month and have NO idea what to wear. I'm thinking fringes and metallics and sequins?! No idea! I'm in my 40s and have a stomach, so nothing skimpy!! Are there any good websites out there you can recommend PLEEEASE? (Thank you! X)

In the UK? In spring? Thermals and an ankle-length puffa ... No, seriously, the secret is layers. You'll be out all day and you can be baking at lunchtime but frozen at 10pm. Go for comfort, especially footwear - big waterproof/mud proof boots you can dance in are ideal. I'd go with jeans or combats, then cute top, covered with long-sleeve top, covered with jumper, covered with waterproof, and you can peel off layers as necessary.

Which festival? I'm struggling to think of any festival, anywhere, where fringes, metallics and sequins would be the go to choice.

idontlikealdi · 24/04/2024 22:46

Where? It makes a BIG difference

Coachella, just Coachella

JennyfromtheBlok · 24/04/2024 22:48

Definitely avoid skimpy or you will freeze.

MissingMoominMamma · 24/04/2024 22:49

The wonderful thing about festivals is you wear what the fuck you like and nobody cares!

Not really.....in UK in like 5 degrees?

WMGPFT · 24/04/2024 22:56

It really depends on the festival, but good advice here about comfortable/waterproof footwear and layers.
Also think about practicality - you don’t want to be messing about with a jumpsuit or similar in festival toilets! Jeans can also feel really cold and take ages to dry if it’s wet.

SomethingIn · 24/04/2024 23:02

Jeans, T-shirt, hoodie and trainers

SomethingIn · 24/04/2024 23:03

If it's boiling then a dress with trainers

SomethingIn · 24/04/2024 23:05

Take some glittery make up if you must but don't apply it on your face till you get there just in case. You could shove a pink feather boa in your bag if need be but wait too see what the vibe is once you get there

SomethingIn · 24/04/2024 23:06

Take a rain poncho. £2 from Tiger Tiger

MissBedelia · 24/04/2024 23:06

Jeans are a bad idea as they take ages to dry if it rains. Also awful in portaloos. I like a pretty short dress over leggings or thick tights. Big boots like docs. A top to wear under said dress if it’s cold, and layers like a military shirt as as a jacket, waterproof, and millions of warm stuff for the night. A hat is a must, for sun, rain, cold. Sunglasses. A scarf for warmth and a cover up if it’s sunny.

SomethingIn · 24/04/2024 23:14

Are you going for the day or camping there

TitInATrance · 24/04/2024 23:27

If you are going to be sitting on the ground a lot take that into consideration- tight jeans can be very uncomfortable. I take a folding chair. First festival I wore a short skirt and sunburnt my legs red, now I go for long skirt or leggings and lots of layers.

Tailfeather · 24/04/2024 23:32

Well I'm remaining positive and hoping the sun comes out next month!!! Surely it can't keep raining forever.....!

Exactly.

Wear a tweed skirt, brogues and a pacamac if you like; a tutu and wellies, or full
mountaineering gear. Nobody gives a fuck. Everyone is just doing their own thing.

BettySweaty · 25/04/2024 10:37

Comfortable footwear is a must.

Anything goes at a festival. Bit of layering good - helps manage the British weather and if you get too warm whilst dancing! Enjoy x

Vermin · 25/04/2024 10:40

wayerproof comfortable hiking boots and something thin and waterproof to cover you. A crossbody bag like the Uniqlo semicircular one which holds lots but doesn’t need hands. Twice as much cash as you think you can possibly spend.

User1979289 · 25/04/2024 10:41

Jeans, walking boats, a vest, a t shirt, a shirt and a massive hoodie with a waterproof on top is my go to. A bumbag, cash, bring water, bring wet wipes.

I've not been to a festival for years, but this sounds good to me.

alloalloallo · 25/04/2024 15:26

We have a big music festival here in June and I see all sorts of people wearing all manner of stuff.

Plenty of people rock up in sequins, metallics and fringes, onesies, fancy dress, all sorts, so if that’s what you fancy, why not?

Depending on the weather, but I just usually wear jeans, t shirt and a hoodie/sweatshirt (something I can tie round my waist and not have to carry) with either trainers, converse, or wellies if it’s wet. I’ve got a thin waterproof jacket that tucks into its own pocket so it’s small enough to fit into a small bag. Or a proper coat if it’s cold.

Musiclover234 · 25/04/2024 15:32

I’d suggest practical for all weathers cos it’s the U.K. and you can get crazy weather. Comfy shoes, maybe spares if very muddy … will need wellies or walking type shoes! Water proof poncho and hoodies served me well cos evening time could feel very chilly.

The glitter, fringes and ‘festival’ type fashion looks good on a first day on a dry day but not so good when it pisses it down all weekend.

Remeber if you are camping: wet clothes won’t dry easily so make sure you have spare.

I went to loads of festivals back in the day for me it was before fashion taking over and was about the music and experience. Was awesome!
