I am so fed up of having itchy eyes all the time. Would appreciate some recommendations please.

I’m over 50 and I wear contacts so I’m sensitive to fibres etc, and I’ve switched to tubing mascara and it’s great - my favourite is the No 7 Stay Perfect.

JustABitOfUncertainty · 24/04/2024 14:29

Thank you @MrsCrumPinnett, could you link me to it so I know I am getting the right one please?

I'd advise trying a tubing mascara too OP. I switched to tubing mascara a few years ago as I'd developed very dry eyes that also ran, and ordinary mascara just ended up smudged, smeared and a mess. There are loads of different ones from different brands but I am using the Catrice Glam and Doll Easy Wash Off one now and I really like it. It's very cheap too, so if you didn't like it you wouldn't have lost too much money.
Have a look on You Tube as well as there are quite a few videos of people reviewing different brands of tubing mascaras and this could help you decide which ones you're going to try. Best of luck, dry, itchy, runny eyes are unpleasant and a nuisance!
P.S. Have you seen your GP about your eyes? They should be able to prescribe drops that would help make your eyes more comfortable. I was prescribed Hylo Care and Hylo Forte drops, and they're really soothing!

JustABitOfUncertainty · 24/04/2024 14:41

Thank you @Blubbled
I notice I can get Hylo Care and Hylo Forte drops from Amazon. What's the difference between them?

Hi there - yes, here’s a link, but in case it fails, it comes up at the top of a Google search using the terms I posted.

Maybelline colossal. Can be taken off with warm water and a wash cloth but stays on with a good cry too.

learieonthewildmoor · 25/04/2024 05:02

Dont buy Maybelline or any of the regular mascaras - sorry pp, but they’re just too harsh. You need to get a vegan or clean one.
Clinique mascaras are failsafe. A brand called Ere Perez does a waterproof one that is excellent. They don’t give you the huge effect of the mascaras with fibres and loads of silicone or whatever, but they look good and don’t make your eyes react.

JustABitOfUncertainty · 25/04/2024 06:11

Thank you @MrsCrumPinnett for that link. I'll go to Boots later. I have also ordered the mascara that @Blubbled has recommended. I am willing to try more, and keep trying until I find the right one, as it's getting extremely uncomfortable. Yet my vanity won't let me go without, and why should it, I want to look good!

Thank you @learieonthewildmoor. I have used Clinique's Lash Power mascara in the past and although it didn't irritate, it dried up extremely quickly, both in the tube and in my eyes, and would cause little flecks of mascara to be scattered around my eyes.

I have not heard of Ere Perez, I'll take a look. How do you remove the mascara? Because that's another issue in itself!

Another good thing about tubing mascara is how easily it comes off. A moist cotton pad held over it briefly to soften it, and you can gently wipe it off.

WhereAreWeNow · 25/04/2024 06:30

Tubing mascara is the answer for me too. I've got on well with lots of them: Clinique, No7, Maybelline, Eyeko.

Different folks, different strokes.

Maybelline is the only eye makeup (including mascara) that I can wear. I’ve tried Clinique and, like everything I’ve tried except Maybelline, I end up with red and itchy eyes.

OP, if you haven’t already tried Maybelline, give it a go. If it doesn’t suit you, it won’t be an expensive mistake as it is far more reasonably priced than some other recommendations.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 25/04/2024 06:35

Agreed. I call it ‘funeral proof’.

RecycleMePlease · 25/04/2024 06:35

Skip it entirely (I have one eye that absolutely hates mascara and eyeliner) - and have a lash lift and dye instead.

Can't smudge, doesn't need removing - it's brilliant

edgeware · 25/04/2024 06:38

So I had the ‘kind’ one in a light blue tube from rimmel or maybelline I think and that was the only normal mascara that didn’t irritate me - however then my sister urged me to try the tubing one from ELF with a green lid and the previous posters are right, tubing mascaras don’t irritate either.

JustABitOfUncertainty · 25/04/2024 06:47

Thanks @edgeware, could you link me to it please?

@RecycleMePlease, thanks but this is not a good option for me. I detest having stuff done, I don't like going anywhere to have anything done, to the point that I delay even my highlights as I can't even face the hairdressers! I don't get pedicures, manicures, waxes, fake tan, botox, or anything like that. I have no time or inclination to get into a new routine that involves me booking regular appointments to get something done. It's tricky enough for me to keep up with hygienist and dentist appointments which are an absolute must.

OP posts:
RecycleMePlease · 25/04/2024 06:55

Fair enough - I'm the same, I have no time (or inclination) to go to salons for anything so I do it myself (took about 3 tries to get in the swing of it) about once every 2 months, takes less than an hour, and could be quicker if I did both eyes at once , I know that this wouldn't be for everyone!

JustABitOfUncertainty · 25/04/2024 07:13

@RecycleMePlease would you link me to the kit you use please?

OP posts:
VerbenaGirl · 25/04/2024 07:15

Tubing mascara for me too. I like the Clinique one. Literally everything irritates my eyes, but that doesn’t. Plus it stays on brilliantly and is simple to remove.

edgeware · 25/04/2024 07:15

@JustABitOfUncertainty

Rimmel mascara

The ELF one

Both very good, the ELF one probably a bit better because it doesn’t run at all

learieonthewildmoor · 25/04/2024 13:06

I use micellar water with a bamboo/cloth wipe then Clinique cleansing balm. Very gentle and effective.

DifficultBloodyWoman: there was another poster who said they had an allergic reaction to Clinique. It is very unusual. I’m really surprised Maybelline works for you.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 25/04/2024 23:02

@learieonthewildmoor I purposely tried Clinique because it was supposed to be so good for sensitive skin. So many people recommended it to me! I tried both skin care products and mascara. I also bought an eyeliner but never used it because of my reaction to the mascara. Sadly, it was not for me. And after I mentioned my reaction, a few people agreed and said it didn’t suit them either (definitely in the minority though).

I’m now extremely brand loyal. Nivea for skincare, Maybelline for makeup. I cannot divert from this without turning into spotty zombie.

And, ironically, I know a lot of people without sensitive skin who find Nivea far too heavy for themselves.

JustABitOfUncertainty · 30/04/2024 11:28

I just thought I'd update you all. For a few days now I have been using No7's tubing mascara and honestly, what a difference!! I no longer think I am going blind, or have itchy eyes that keep watering. I still have the ELF one to try, as well as Catrice.

The mascara that caused me so much angst is Lancome's Hypnose Doll Eyes, so not a cheap one at all. But there you go!

OP posts:
WhereAreWeNow · 01/05/2024 08:07

Glad you found one that works for you OP. Honestly, tubing mascara is a revelation. So much better for sensitive eyes.

RosyappleA · 01/05/2024 17:54

After reading this thread I tried the Soap and Glory, I would have loved this in my 20s as it lengthens and adds volume and makes my lashes almost too amazing for me now. It is also budge proof with no smudging. Tricky to remove though.
I will try the no7 for something more natural. I tried a sample of the hourglass unlocked, also a tubing mascara but seems too dry doesn’t do much for my lashes.
