Going pixie cut short after long hair.

I’ve got a hair appointment booked today and I’m considering going super short (for me) and trying a pixie cut. The shortest I’ve been before is a graduated bob. My hair is currently just below shoulder length, straight with no real style.

Just wondered about the pro and cons of styling afterwards and if anyone has regretted going short. Anything I should be aware of? My hair grows fairly fast so if I dislike it I won’t have it much past the summer. I know I’ll have to keep on top of trims if I like it.

I wear glasses and a little overweight so face is rounder rather than sharper so wondering if a fringe will soften it?

Have you done one of those apps where you put your photo in and 'try on' different hairstyles?

If it suits you then go for it - maybe a fringe and side bits feathering in

What texture is your hair - would it fall automatically into a cute pixie or would you have to style it with product daily?

No, I’ve not looked at an app but it’s a good idea.

My hair is straight and neither thin nor particularly thick with a central parting. It does grow
quite quickly which is possibly a problem if I liked it but helpful if i didn’t!

My only problem with having a short haircut is that most hairdressers now don't have lots of experience cutting, if you look at hairdresser websites or insta profiles it's all balliage (I can't spell it) and long curls.
I have struggled for years to find anyone that can cut a fringe straight so all I would say is make sure you are confident your hairdresser is experienced at cutting short hair.

I've recently gone from long (always worn tied up with a clip) to very short - but what I have found that any bits of the style long enough to flap about in the wind do so most irritatingly and I have to carry a hairbrush at all times which I never had to do with long hair.

Fushia123 · 24/04/2024 10:13

I had mine cut yesterday - usually a layered Bob but I wanted it shorter but still long enough to tuck behind my ears if I want to.
I couldn’t find any photos of what I wanted to show to my hairdresser - the nearest was some Pinterest pics of Pixie Bobs which were nice too.
If it’s shorter it’s always going to be quicker to dry and I dry in sections and then go over each with a light touch with the straightener.
I forget about my roundish face and glasses and just look at my lovely hair and sunny disposition!

I have my hair short from being long and absolutely love it. I'd never go back. It's a million times easier to look after day to day. But I've gone from having it cut about 4 times per year to having it cut every month. Echo PP that it can be difficult to find hairdressers confident/experienced with short hair.

I did a big cut some years ago - bottom of ribs length to pixie cut. I liked the look but the upkeep was too much, and I had to move to washing it every day instead of every other day as otherwise the back stuck up like a peacock no matter how much product I tried to stick it down with.

With your parting, are you able to move it or does it always part centrally whatever you do? Most pixie styles you'd need to train it not to part or to part at the side or you'll end up with 90s curtains.

ooh, yes – I once spontaneously asked a hairdresser to cut a fringe in because I could tell from the outset that he was going to be really good. So maybe wait until you're in the seat and can see if the hairdresser is really engaged and seems competent?

If you go for super short, I'd say make your next appointment before you leave the salon. GOOD LUCK!

Thank you for your thoughts, they have given me.plenty to consider. I can move the parting or have a fringe cut in, my hair is pretty much without a style at the moment, just straight and just below my shoulders where I grew out a blunt bob.

Oh, well done OP!

Are you brave enough to post before and after photos (with your face scribbled out for privacy)? I'm always fascinated by threads like this and love to see how short cuts turn out, as I'm not brave enough to go for it myself!

jackstini · 25/04/2024 14:13

Would love to see it OP!

Redshoeblueshoe · 25/04/2024 14:15

The advantage of very short hair is it only takes minutes to wash and dry it.

REP22 · 25/04/2024 14:19

Well done OP! I did this myself not long ago - really long hair to a rough-pixie. The slightly tousled look suits my also rather round face and is easy to maintain. You're brilliant for having the bravery to do it. It must be very satisfying and I'm glad you're happy with it. x

OneThreadOnly · 25/04/2024 15:38

Can you post a pic? I would love to see!

Vettrianofan · 25/04/2024 15:41

I would say that from experience of long hair to pixie cut that it's a lot of regular maintenance. You'll need much more regular cuts to keep in shape compared to longer hair.

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 25/04/2024 15:49

I've had short hair for years - love it.

There is every chance you'll have to wash and style it every day - but it takes all of 90 seconds to blow dry it - whack some product in and away you go.

Note - i think product is important for it to look good, or else you can look like you've just not bothered - I use mousse and then either wax or styling cream, depending what i've done with it that day, then hairspray. It's got no business moving about Grin

It stays put all day long - no more attention needed till the next day. Mine grows like grass and i have it trimmed every 6 weeks.
