Any red skin miracles?

Grumpymiddleagedwoman43 · 24/04/2024 07:30

My skin has been getting more and more red and sensitive every year since hitting 40. I have loads of bumps and lumps under the skin too, it's never smooth any more.

I'm at a loss and wondered if there were any tips/products mumsnetters could recommend?

At the moment I cleanse with Rose water, use CeraVe retinol serum day/night, use factor 50 daily under my makeup, and use a rosewater gel cream by nivea. Diet is very good, though I could eat less sugar (don't want to though!)

I cover it with make up, but would love to feel more skin confidence without it.

Or is it just time to accept my lot?! TIA 😊

Any red skin miracles?

You need a green concealer to tone the red areas down

Thanks for responding.
I have used that before and it works very well.
I guess I'm asking for things that help get rid of the red rather than just cover it up.
I'd like to use less make-up rather than more, but realise this might be impossible!

I would go to the doctors tbh and see what they suggest everything else is just cosmetic

Grumpymiddleagedwoman43 · 24/04/2024 08:01

You're probably right, all the years of foundation etc have created the problems. I will try this, though scrubbing usually breaks me out in spots, but perhaps I have to persevere.

It's
Rosacea which is autoimmune. I have it. I use green concealer but certain things make is worse
Sun alcohol etc.
Visit a gp or go private to a dermatologist.

elevens24 · 24/04/2024 08:09

Have you had any cosmetic treatments? Laser gets good results for this, though not cheap. Check out BBL or moxi

Azelaic acid is really good for inflammation and hyperpigmentation. It really calms down redness.

ASighMadeOfStone · 24/04/2024 08:43

Apart from the above advice for the irritation, I'd drop the retinol for a week or so (it should be used only at night in any case) and add a richer yet more gentle moisturizer. Cicaplast baume by LRP or any other brand with Cica will calm down the irritation. In the products you're currently using, there's very little hydration.

That looks like Rosacea. Try Dr Jart Cicapair.

I've eliminated my redness over night by using vinegar but I don't have the bumps that you have.

BookWorm45 · 24/04/2024 09:15

I think it might be rosacea - I have similar. What has sometimes helped is a prescription from GP - Soolantra. However even using that, I find the rosacea comes and goes (though not as badly as when I wasn't using the cream at all).

This ^^. Better to try to sort it out than cover it up. Soolantra was very effective for me, although I do still occasionally get a tiny red spot or two on my nose just before my period.

Yes, try Sudocream overnight.
It works great.

Azelaic acid in a serum form. I use Skin & Me and part of my routine in to apply this in the morning, which calms redness. Absolutely brilliant stuff.

Thanks all, lots of tips and things to try.

Hi I have had similar. This is the protocol that works well for me and seems to reduce the redness. You could also go to a professional dermatologist (wouldn’t recommend a beauty place) and see if IPL laser treatment would be effective to reduce the redness.

night time:
Clinique liquid facial soap - mild
la roche posay Haylu B5 serum
Cosrx Snail mucin (1 pump) can get on Amazon

morning:
I dont wash my face with anything. Have a shower usually so get water on my face. Otherwise I juts leave it. paper key the oils generated overnight shouldn’t be stripped in the morning and help protect the skin. Works well for me.

la roche posay vitamin c serum
la roche posay Haylu B5 serum
Cosrx Snail mucin (1 pump)
la Roche Possay anthelious 50+ sunscreen.

I Dont use any moisturiser at all now the above is enough.

every few nights I use la roche posay retinol and, I’m building up gradually over weeks to be able to use it each evening. Tried using it everyday and my skin went mad.

I swear by this routine for my redness. You can get it all from boots, other than the Corsx.

*apparently - not paper key 😂

It could be rosacea but equally could be a reaction to the retinol, I'd stop using it immediately.

Switch to CeraVe hydrating wash and CeraVe PM moisturiser and use nothing else for a month , if it hasn't improved the see the GP.

Ticketybooboo · 24/04/2024 13:42

I went to doctors about this last week but had a response to the gel prescribed. So I went to our excellent local botanist and have been using a vitamin e oil mixed with one drop of lavender essential oil along with turmeric for inflammation twice a day. I also bought the Aveeno calm and restore gel and it’s definitely gone down a week later.

ASighMadeOfStone · 24/04/2024 13:43

Could someone switch the shouty bot off?

Favouritefruits · 24/04/2024 13:47

it looks like dermatitis, lots of people are getting it including myself after years of trying new creams and treatments. Cut back and use plain water then a mild gentle cleanser and moisturiser.

KarateSchnitzel · 24/04/2024 13:53

I agree with above, it looks like rosacea to me too. I've struggled with it for a couple of years now and tried lots to try and calm the redness. The only thing that has made a considerable difference is a prescription treatment from dermatica. I stopped as it looked like it had cleared up late last summer but it's gradually coming back so I'm going to start my orders with dermatica again.
