How often do you get your hair PROFESSIONALLY dyed and what do you do between salon visits?

Just that really. This is aimed at those whose natural hair has started turning grey.

I used to have my hair dyed at the salon but as I started getting greyer, I decided I couldn't afford to go back every four weeks and started using box dyes instead.

Several years later, I've realised how flat and awful my hair colour is and have decided to go back to getting it professionally coloured. However, I'm still not keen on paying out for it every four weeks.

Ideally I would prefer to go every eight weeks but don't want an inch or more of grey roots!

Has anyone got any suggestions on how to deal with the new growth between visits?

What does everyone else do?

Thank you!

Every five weeks or so. I don’t do anything inbetween.

MyFavouritePlace · 23/04/2024 19:32

I go every 5 to 6 weeks to get it dyed and use Wow (powder), similar to an eye shadow. It does the trick for the last couple of weeks!

FrannieGallops · 23/04/2024 19:33

I get mine professionally coloured about 3x a year. In between, I do the roots myself as I simply can’t be arsed to travel in to London to see my colourist. She gave me the ‘recipe’ and told me what to buy, and as I do only the roots, it looks just as good (in my opinion).

tobee · 23/04/2024 19:33

I get mine done probably every 12 weeks and do root touch up in between; whenever I'm desperate. My colourist is ok with this. I tend to use a mix or 2 to 3 different boxes of colour shades in an effort to look better. Using touch up just on roots is a better option than doing the whole head.

I keep promising myself I'll prioritise spending money on my colour but a) it's so expensive b) it's reasonably hard to get an appointment when I want c) sometimes a last minute event comes up and need to get it done immediately because not prepared to look like a badger. 🦡

Witsend2023 · 23/04/2024 19:42

Have you enquired about "lived in" colour? It's a bit like balayage and they can work your grey into it. Means you don't need to get it done very often. Probably only works for lighter coloured hair though

Loopylooni · 23/04/2024 20:49

I try and get it professionally done every 3 to 4 weeks but in between I use colour wow (get someone else to do it). When I tried colouring myself, it looked so flat

Dewdilly · 23/04/2024 20:50

Never. I’m 58 and dye it myself. I wouldn’t ever have it done professionally.

MrsTeepee · 23/04/2024 20:53

Using semi permanent helps prolong the time between visits, plus gives a more natural look as they grow out.

I'm brunette so use John Frieda too, which helps blend the greys a little.

Yes I do this.

Same journey as OP. Didn't want to go to the salon so often. Moved to a box. Looked crap. Eventually back to salon. Go every five weeks. Semi perm so quicker and cheaper. Alternate between roots one visit, all over the next. Looks so much nicer.

TippyToes123 · 23/04/2024 21:02

OK, thank you for your replies . Root touch ups between visits sounds like the way to go. Hopefully my new hairdresser will be able to advise on what to use. I'm so out of touch as I've been using box dyes for about the last 10 years.

Ideally I would get it done every four weeks but I would struggle to fit in such frequent appointments and begrudge the cost.

Thanks, I'll ask him about this.

I get a half head of highlights every 6 months. The colours are quite mixed, there is some grey still there, some flaxen blonde, some golden blonde and sometimes some red. The overall look is pretty close to how my natural colour was in my teens.

It's a long and expensive appointment but as it's only twice a year it doesn't feel too bad.

am intrigued, are these specialist products for home dyers which she's suggested?

Every seven weeks but could go longer. My hair was naturally very dark.

You need to go lighter as you go grey otherwise you will have a very definite grey line within a short timeframe. Advice from my hairdresser.......

HesterPrincess · 23/04/2024 21:28

I have a half head of highlights every 6 to 8 months. It's horribly tedious as it takes ages, but I always love the results. They use a blend of dark chocolate (my natural pre grey colour), warm copper blonde and bleached blonde. I then use a dark coloured shampoo (Plantur) once a week or so and that covers the remaining greys. Blends the greys rather than hiding them.

Fishwiife · 23/04/2024 22:17

I had my colour done in a well known high st chain, took note of the stuff they used, ordered it from Amazon with the developer and do it myself. Much better than a box dye

Eyesopenwideawake · 23/04/2024 22:19

Mine's very short and white blonde so if I leave it more than 6 weeks it looks horrible. But at €65 all in it's my only luxury and one I'd be loathe to give up.

RosesAndHellebores · 23/04/2024 22:26

Every seven weeks. I was naturally light brown wild rodent.

My hairdresser puts in a mixture of highlights and lowlights (three colours). Sometimes more high (blonde), sometimes more low (browny). She does more at the front where I am very gray - still brown at the back. It's lighter than my natural colour and the colours mingle. Therefore no hardline but I couldn't eke it out beyond seven weeks.

My hair is my self care luxury. I'm in my 60s, work full time and the dc are grown up.

AccidentalTourism · 26/04/2024 21:35

Every 6 weeks, any longer and I look scruffy.

SunshineOnARainyDay3 · 26/04/2024 21:43

My hair grows slowly. I get my hair dyed every 9weeks. I use the L'Oréal Magic Retouch when the roots are annoying me. (I thought it was a naff idea but then I saw a beauty influencer using it and I was sold!!)

LeChatChat · 26/04/2024 21:45

I go to the salon every 5 weeks and use Magic Retouch spray on my parting in weeks 4 and 5. If you buy it in a shade lighter than your hair it seems to work better - I use Golden Brown on my very dark hair. The Dark Brown shade doesn't seem to take on it. No idea why.

This is my ‘recipe’ -

Revlon revlonissimo - 2 parts 8sn and 1 part 7sn and 20 vol
So if you mix 30g of colour (20g 8sn and 10g 7sn) you’ll use 45g of 20vol

My hair is a caramel colour.

cathyandclaire · 26/04/2024 22:26

I go every 8 weeks and buy the same professional stuff as my hairdresser to touch up in between.
