Waxing virgin - handy hints...?? Bit scared (I know that's stupid)

OK. I am a beauty novice.
But decided I am going to get my legs waxed (I de-hair infrequently with razors and very occasionally cream).
Going full-leg.
No comments please like "WHAT!!!!! You cave person"

What do I need to know, any handy hints?
How do I spot a good salon?
Do I wear a wafty skirt after??
Moisturise?
Take pain relief before hand?
Will rhere be an instant improvement and I'll have amazing legs? 😄

Why would you suddenly have 'amazing legs'? Your legs will be the same as they were with hair, just bald. The effect of removing hair will be the same as your other methods of removing hair in the past. It should just last longer.

Have you had any experience with a wax? I've had chin hairs waxed and I don't see how pain relief in the form of standard painkiller tablets would have helped any. If you had something to make you insensate, sure. But standard paracetamol won't numb the sensation.

I was joking (added a smiley face to indicate this) about the amazing legs. Just light hearted banter...

Never had any waxing done. Waxing virgin as the title says.

Had heard a friend say (many years ago) they took Pain relief. Was just asking..

Take 2 paracetamol 30 mins before your appointment. Legs are easy I think and not painful at all and subsequent waxing is even less painful.

Exfoliate but don't moisturise the night before.

Best to wear baggy trackies or a maxi skirt for after. Bonus if you wear a maxi skirt you can just hitch it up rather than removing. Legs can be a bit sticky afterwards or feel oily.

No creams, lotions or swimming for 24hrs post wax.

You know thay feeling if pure bliss when you slip into fresh cool sheets at night after a good shave and moisture. It will be like times 10.

Good luck and enjoy the pamper

The pain really isn't that bad, so painkillers probably won't be needed. If you have periods, don't book the wax for when you're due on though as then it does hurt!

Christ some mumsnetters just argue about anything don’t they

take some ibuprofen which will help with reducing the inflammation

but otherwise, you don’t really need to do anything. Leg waxing isn’t very painful, it’ll sting a bit around the ankles but otherwise not too bad. Hollywood wax much more painful! And underarms!

Beautician here, prep is key. Exfoliate and moisture
Use the day prior to your waxing and take a paracetamol.
The first time is intense but not unbearable and it does get easier.
I always recommend my clients do a wax, wait 4 weeks, repeat and then wait 6 weeks this helps get the hair into the same cycle.

Listen to your therapists after care, no hot water, perfumed products or fake tan for 24 hrs and avoid heat such as subbed for a minimum of 48hrs.

Wear loose clothing to your appointment and try not to have yourself overly stressed as that increases the blood flow and cortisol levels in the body so can make it nippier

Stick with it it's worth it

For a good result make sure you leave the hair to grow for a good couple of weeks. The hairs need to be long enough for the wax to grip on to and you want as many hairs through as possible for a longer lasting result.
Look for reviews online, Lyon is a good brand of wax and gets the job done pretty quickly!

You sound like an absolute hoot

@Rebusmyfire I went for my first leg wax in 15 years last week. Painfree! I think the wax and strips have improved over the years as it used to hurt me but not this time. I was amazed. Beautician was very speedy. Bikini is probably a whole different story but legs were fine. Don’t worry.

Rebusmyfire · 23/04/2024 18:50

Thank you lovely people. This has reassured my stupid worries and an appointment will be booked in a salon.

Why do many mumsnetters seem to have a sense of humour bypass these days? I'm sure it didn't used to be a problem!

It feels everything you type has to be challenged on here these days....

But at least I know for certain my legs won't transform into long beautiful scar free wonders.....

I have regular Hollywood waxes, so legs would be a walk in the park! There is good advice from most up thread, so little to add. You might want to avoid tights the following day.

There is a slight downside in that you need some regrowth before you can be done again.
