Thinning hair - parting getting wider, scalp more visible

I am early 50s and on HRT already. I have just started taking Viviscal so can't report yet. Is there anything else I could be doing to to at least stop the loss of my already fine hair, and even better, get some of it back?

Sunshine. (Long tropical holiday.)
Vitamin D. (A good second best.)
LED hairbrush.
Different haircut by expert hairdresser.

To protect the hair you have: don't use heat when styling and don't tie it back. You might want to consider leaving an extra day between washing if you're losing a lot in the shower.

Biotin might work but Viviscal already contains it. Any supplement takes at least 3 months to kick in because that's the length of the hair growth cycle.

Thank you. I never tie my hair back, ever, but it's difficult for me not to use a hairdryer. My hair looks horrible if left au naturel, just horrible. I can't look like that at work. So I do dry it straight, but as I have so little, it doesn't take long at all, 10 mins max. I also use protectors. Usually Kerastase which is good stuff.

I'd see a trichologist but select one carefully!

It really does sound as if - whatever else you do - you need a good haircut that works with your hair and adds fullness at the scalp. It shouldn’t be impossible to find.

low iron is often responsible for hair loss. Needs to be over 50 or 70 for regrowth I’m told. The nhs would tell you 20 is fine but it’s not for hair. I take one ferrous sulphate tablet a day

ItWasntMyFault · 24/04/2024 07:51

I have the same issue. I've been using plantur 39 shampoo and taking biotin for months.
I'm losing less and also getting some fine re growth. It's still not great but is better than it was.
(I'm 55 and not on HRT)

Regaine foam. It works but you have to keep using it.
