How do you stop biting your nails?

burstingbug · 01/04/2008 12:34

I've always bitten mine, if I stop then 2 weeks is about the most I can abstain for.
They are just starting to look like nails, almost reaching the top of my fingers atm as opposed to stumps.

How do you beat the habit?
I know that if I am particually nervous & anxious about something, then my nails have no chance!

Thumb nails are the always the last to be chewed off

I bit mine practically since birth, but when I was pregnant I noticed they were growing faster and made the most of it. I bought Sally Hansen pink nail hardener and put loads of it on with nail varnish as my nails got longer. It really works - I had a relapse recently, but they're growing again! Hth!

CrackerOfNuts · 01/04/2008 12:48

I did it, but tbh I am not sure how.

I had always bitten mine, and even bitten false nails .

I split with xp about 2 years ago and just decided to give it another go, and that was it, I grew them and haven't bitten them since.
I think as soon as I got to the point where they looked really nice and I was proud of them, it made determined not to bite them again.

CrackerOfNuts · 01/04/2008 12:49

Oh yes,I always managed to grow them when pregnant, but would bite them again afterwards, which was just weird.

burstingbug · 01/04/2008 12:53

I have nail hardener, perhaps I ought to give it another go.

OPI's Nail Envy is an excellent hardener.

But if it's really bad, I get gel or acrylic fake-o nails stuck on the top*. Just plain-coloured gloss, nice and short, so they look natural. And use loads of handcream on the cuticles to tidy them up.

If the fakes are on they last for a month or so, and you can have them topped up I stop biting like that (I even got through the runup to my driving test without nibbling). And I'm a terrible biter.

It's such a treat to look at nice nails... it's very good for the soul.

  • at cheap nailbar, it costs about £20 I think.

Another nail biter since (almost) birth here

With mine I can grow them till they reach the tops of my fingers (like burstingbug),then they start to 'irritate' me so I bite them again.

The only way I manage to grow them any longer is if I stick falsies on.

When they've grown up abit then I take the falsie's off and have lovely nails.

Like Cracker when I split with Dc's dad I grew them and they were really long and hard, hardly ever broke ...I used to take amazing care of them.

Late last year we moved house and with all the moving ,unpacking etc they mostly broke and I started biting them again

I'm now fighting the biting battle again but have a big family wedding in May and I'm determined I'm going with my own long nails,no falsies

Can I recommend Sally Hansens Miracle Grow...really makes them grow quicker

Wilko's French Manicured False nails (99p) I've paid out for acrylics, gels, done my own(I could set up in business as a nail technician) and tried every falsie in Boots but these are the best and most natural I've found.

MyEye · 01/04/2008 15:57

gah -- this thread made me go off and have the falsies done again
I feel all peaceful now looking at them, knowing there's no point in biting

burstingbug · 01/04/2008 20:15

Glad you feel peaceful now

I found the strengthener I had upstairs, used 2 coats of it then put on a pale pink varnish that doesn't show up too much.
May have weakened them tonight though as I've been swimming.
