Shopping for ‘summer clothes’ while it hails

The shops ‘summer’ ranges are out, and increasingly each week’s release is more and more inappropriate for the weather.

Today Boden has a fabulous range of… pineapple and parrot print / embroidery hot pink numbers.

Mint Velvet’s models posing in their linen outfits on sand dunes.

Open toed sandals, strapped dresses… it all looks fabulous.

… meanwhile, it’s still ten degrees (and forecast to be all week) and rains constantly.

Am I delusional to purchase these items? Will it ever be warm again / for long enough to get any wear out of them?

Yes it’s delusional but I don’t blame you for being deluded. We all want to believe we will be wafting about in pretty floaty dresses and cute sandals.

I’ve decided to only allow myself 3 maxi dresses, 1 maxi skirt, 2 pairs of shorts, 3 summer/strappy tops and 1 beach cover up. Otherwise the space summer takes up in my wardrobe is vastly disproportions to how much I actually wear it.

It’s really depressing

I saw a lover halter neck dress and put it in basket. Then cancelled the order (reluctantly) as I decided I wouldn’t get the use out of it. Ordered myself a new dog walking fleece instead!

MidnightPatrol · 22/04/2024 10:48

@GoodnightAdeline There are just so many fabulous dresses and patterns out there!

I’ve already rationalised that I have plenty of summer shoes (all of which had about five wears apiece last summer), but it’s hard to resist some of the clothes.

Problem is… you won’t wear them. Unless you can style them with a jumper (and raincoat tbh).

Maybe the shops should be trying to create some of these summer pieces in fleece, for us British folk.

It's spring. This is what spring is like unfortunately! Summer doesn't start until June 21st so we've a long way to go before we can start calling the weather unseasonal :)

MidnightPatrol · 22/04/2024 10:53

@TheBirdintheCave i agree - it’s been a looooong winter though, and the shops are teasing us with their summer ranges!

I mean open-toed shoes, it’s barely warm enough to take socks off indoors!

TheBirdintheCave · 22/04/2024 11:07

@MidnightPatrol Yeah I agree they do shift the ranges a month or two too early
!

henlake7 · 22/04/2024 11:24

It just feels so depressing, doesnt it? I bought several vest tops for summer as I needed some basics....I suppose they will also work under jumpers for now!

Although I have seen plenty of people out in t shirts and shorts. They must be freezing but are clearly determined to start summer early!

Riverlee · 22/04/2024 11:42

Our heating still comes on!

pelotonaddiction · 22/04/2024 11:43

I've just bought some sandals so that's guaranteed another 3 months of rain

lissie123 · 22/04/2024 11:47

Yes. I’ve been so tempted by the floaty dress scenario but in reality muddy dog walks are my truth. So I’ve ordered new house dressing stuff and plants for the garden instead.

The good news is that the rest of Europe is suffering as well! Italy is blooming chilly right now, as is the south of France.

That does make me feel slightly better. That probably makes me a bad person.

SwearyBetty · 22/04/2024 12:06

I bought some lovely summer clothes.....2 years ago and they still have the tags on. I need to it to be at least 26 degrees to be able to wear most of them!

Riverlee · 22/04/2024 16:13

Just saw that in Kent it could be freezing, or even below freezing tonight. Brrr.

Fairyliz · 22/04/2024 16:49

I’m someone who really feels the cold (under active thyroid) so most of the year I dress in woolly jumpers.
Unfortunately about 60% of my wardrobe is lovely cotton/linen /silk dresses. I get seduced by the idea of floating around in the sunshine.
So my resolution is not to buy any summer clothes at all; I must have enough to last me the next 20 years at least.
If anyone sees any nice wool/cashmere jumpers on sale can you let me know.

ItsTapasTime · 22/04/2024 17:48

I bloody hate winter. The only thing that gets me through it, is planning my summer holiday wardrobe. Not much in the shops Jan-March, so I’ve spent a small fortune on bnwt clothing from Vinted. Not overly impressed with the high streets’ summer collections so far - lots of neutrals and dull colours. If anyone spots any knee length, beach (or breakfast 😉) dresses in turquoise or sea green, please post the links.

DuesToTheDirt · 22/04/2024 18:21

I honestly don't know why they bother selling summer clothes round here, except for people going on holiday.

Realdeal1 · 22/04/2024 18:42

Yep, I'm out for a walking date soon yet I'm freezing. How to be sexy and lovely whilst wrapped up in my big coat!
