Asics Gel Cumulus 24 trainers

I have achilles tendonitus and these trainers are recommended. I've been looking online but all the sites that sell them that come up seem dodgy. I've checked on trustpilot and it seems that I am right to be suspicious. Where do people order trainers from these days? I bought my last couple of pairs from John Lewis but they don't have the exact ones that I want. Could it be because they are an old model? Would the 25 or 26 be the same? Not sure if this is the right place to post as they are not particuarly stylish! Might put it in exercise too.

The current version of the Cumulus is 26. Each season it comes in varied colours and is given a higher number. So 24 is two seasons ago. The current model is full price but you can generally pick up older seasons (such as the 24) for a discount.

It's the same shoe - although there are men and women's (so different colours and mens are for broader feet).

I've been wearing the Cumulus for running / gym for approx 15 years.

I buy mine wherever I get the best price for the colour I want.

My DH has a neurological condition and he wears the ASICS gel nimbus. When his became tatty I couldn’t find the number he wears so got the newer version and he was in so much pain!! They were not the same.

We ended up getting some on Amazon so maybe check there?

I bought my last pair direct from Asics, but I’ll probably try and avoid that in future. I needed to size up, and their customer service was pretty bad- really ridiculous long-winded processes for returns and exchanges.

Try sports direct or sports shoes.com. I’ve just bought the 25 (last years model) and they’re great - really bouncy and supportive.

Start isn't dodgy. Ordered from them many times.

I'd probably go up half a size too if they are for running.

Thanks for your replies everyone. I'm ideally looking for black (or mostly black) as I will be wearing them for work with black trousers. I think I would need a size 5 and a half or 6 (I'm usually a 5 or 5 and a half in other shoes/boots) I don't run but am on my feet all day at work (I'm a teacher) which is why I think the achilles tendonitus insn't getting any better - I've had it for at least 6 months now.

I had achilles tendonitis for 3 years. My physio advised that I wear Sorbothane heel pads in my shoes/trainers (even my Cumulus). They definitely helped. I'm pain free now but still wear them as a preventative measure.

Who recommended the Asics Cumulus?
They wouldn't be my first choice for wearing with trousers or for foot problems.
I'd look for a stability/structured shoe like the Kayano or from Brooks.
For a shoe that doesn't look too much like you're off jogging, I'd try Skechers, Fitflop or Hotter, or use orthotics.

The reason they are recommended for achiles/calf issues is because of the high heel toe drop. IIRC the Gel Cumulus 24 has an 8 or 10mm drop. They are also fairly cushioned so comfy for wearing for long periods. You can look for similar qualities in a different shoe - the heel toe drop is key. Definitely do not get the trail (off road) version, or stability options linked here.

Just checking you have seen that Asics are still selling them in black in your size? https://outlet.asics.com/gb/en-gb/gel-cumulus-24/p/1012B206-020.html?width=Standard

Natty13 · 22/04/2024 14:28

I would recommend the Gel Nimbus 24 as a good alternative (I'm a runner and have had pairs of both these exact shoes in recent years). They do come in full black, but you'd have to look round for some stock https://outlet.asics.com/gb/en-gb/gel-nimbus-24/p/1012B201-002.html?width=Standard

Thank you so much for the further very helpful replies. @Natty13 have you used the site you linked to? The reviews are not great. I will definately order those heel pads @HundredMilesAnHour - and I can't believe you had achilles tendinitus for 3 years, poor you. @FayCarew thanks for the links - that gives me a lot more to think about.

Just adding an update for those interested - and it might help others with achillles tendonitis. I am now the proud owner of 2 pairs of Asics gel-cumulus 24 - one all black pair and one violet. They are so comfortable and my heel feels so much better. I also bought the heel pads recommended and have put them in my DMs and they have made a difference too. Thanks again for everyone's help and advice.
