Affordable tween girl clothing - UK (online!)

Eledamorena · 19/04/2024 03:36

Where can I look online for basics like shorts, t-shirts, dresses for a 9 year old girl?

She has just about sized out of H&M; their biggest size is age 12-13 I think and she will grow out of this soon. But she's only 9!

I live overseas but my sister will visit soon, so I can make an order and she will bring it out to me. Very hot and humid here, year-round, so I only need summer clothing. I will look at Sainsbury's and other supermarkets online, as their children's stuff seems to go up a bit bigger. Matalan maybe?

Any other ideas? In particular, I'm looking for denim shorts, cotton shortie-style knickers, and oversized t-shirts, but a few dresses or 'pretty' tops would be great, too. She seems to have grown out of everything!

She is about 140cm tall and I would say on the thicker side of average, but not overweight. It's hard for me to judge as we live in Asia and she is definitely chunky compared to a lot of her friends here, but I think in the UK she would be more in line with average build 🤷‍♀️

All ideas welcome! But affordable, please 😬

New Look do a 9-15 range, Next and M&S both good and not expensive. We've bought lovely skorts from Mountain Warehouse before, not sure of age limit though. Sainsbury's and Tesco both do kids clothes.

Tesco isn't available online. Sainsburys (TU), M&S and Asda all do kids clothes up to age 16 that are great (although not massive ranges). I would also recommend looking at the boys sections of them for basics as the t shirts/shorts/jumpers etc come up longer/wider and are usually in colours/prints that are fine. Only as my tween doesn't like the 'cropped' style that's about in most of the girl sections.

If you sign up to the sites/nectar/sparks cards you can keep an eye out for offers also - there's usually money off at various points of the year.

H&M's girls range goes up to 14 years. You could also check their adult range for things like shorts where length doesn't matter. Their UK adult size range starts from a 4 (8 is roughly equivalent to their children's age 14).

Agree that H&M goes from age 14-size 4 adults. Has been perfect for my 12 year old however I do think the fit is slim.

Next also goes up to age 14 and the fit is much more ‘standard’.

Matalan do a tween range

You can get some cracking deals in the Zara kids sales. We also shop in river island or new look online (but find new look can be surprisingly expensive).

New look does a tween / teen range. Matalan can be a but hit and miss. Definitely the supermarkets, I think Tu is the best quality. I would take a look at La Redoute too, sometimes some good deals and they have a teen range. Some next stuff can be quite reasonable in the kidswear. My dd just got a couple of lovely summery jumpsuits. You can buy some Primark online and my dd wears women's XXS in tops so might be ok for t shirts, bottoms quite there yet. Peacocks is another good one to look at.

Next goes up to age 16.

Uniqlo does a lot of clothes based on size so it's worth looking at - it also tends to size up.

APurpleSquirrel · 19/04/2024 07:49

My DD is the same - age 9 (going on 10) but wears a size 12-13 as she's tall. It's hard as the ranges aimed at teens (which seem to mostly consist of monotone colours in crop tops & joggers) are not appropriate or what she wants (or not want I her) to wear.
Sainsbury's TU is great - lots of colours & different styles. Lots of shorts atm.
Also rate M&S & FatFace (but their range stops at 12-13).
Was very disappointed with H&M & New Look when we looked last.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 19/04/2024 07:51

My DD sounds about the same are yours and we shop for exactly the same, basics and some pretty bits & pieces.

M&S do their kids clothes up to age 16, we get nice summer basics from there and they are usually 3 for 2.

Next are good too, again kids range goes up to 16 and they have nice things.

Uniqlo too, their kids range is nice, she got some lovely summer pretty dresses there a couple of weeks ago.

H&M older girls stuff is really boring and my DD won't even look there anymore as she likes bright colours and pretty dresses!

Hopefully all the retailers have their summer stock out now though, that's always a challenge here, if you're looking for summer clothes in March/April the shops might still be full of winter things!

Next & Mango are good - Boden you can get some basics but some of the styles will be too young, their sizing is good though and goes up to 15 I think.
