Teenage trends

I'd like to get my tween daughter something trendy for her birthday as her main present. She likes her style.

I see kids wearing north face and Nike dunks/jet

What is trendy in this type of clothes please? I wouldn't know.

Are dunks out now?

Don't want to spend money for something she won't wear soon. I know I shouldn't be encouraging this but she doesn't ask for much and loves clothes.

Many thanks

My daughter is a tween and I brought her a lot of stuff online from Mango Teen - she loves cargo jeans, flares, t shirts ect. I was surprised she loved all my choices for her birthday. I also got her a beige tracksuit from Zara which she absolutely loved! Can send you links if you think it’s something she’d like. My old Dd has northface jacket but she’s not gonna grow anymore and that was bloody expensive!

Can your present not be a day out shopping so she can choose? I have fond memories of my mum doing that for me!

norma1980 · 18/04/2024 09:59

Hi @Secondstart1001 links would be great please! I didn't think of mango

@HollyGolightly4 I'd love that but I'm hoping to use a bit of klarna to spread the cost which I don't think I can do in high street

My teenager really wants a white fox hoody, they take a while to come though

Cbljgdpk · 18/04/2024 10:10

White fox hoody’s are everywhere at the moment

MetaDaughter · 18/04/2024 10:38

How about a subscription to Vogue, plus an offer to buy her something she chooses herself? (I don’t mean from Vogue, but maybe inspired by …)

She might find a print magazine interestingly retro …

norma1980 · 18/04/2024 11:09

@TheGirlWhoLived good call re white fox hoody. I've seen them everywhere too and no idea where the brand has suddenly come from

@MetaDaughter thanks she'd actually love that she wants to be a designer

Honestly I wouldn't try and guess yourself, I'd give her a budget and let her pick

MetaDaughter · 18/04/2024 11:23

Ah - well in that case, depending on where you are in the country, you may want to start saving for trips to fashion and costume exhibitions at places like the V&A and the Tate, etc. Those would make excellent future birthday presents.

TeenLifeMum · 18/04/2024 12:26

It massively depends. My 12yo twins are in year 8. One is a dancer and it’s all about Nike leggings whereas the other wouldn’t be seen dead in those.

TheValueOfEverything · 18/04/2024 12:35

White and cream leisurewear

Crop tops from Primark

White Fox stuff (although I suspect this trend is running its course)

Anything from Urban Outfitters (so over-priced, but they love it!). These joggers seem to be in right now, and are on sale: https://www.urbanoutfitters.com/en-gb/shop/iets-frans-navy-twisted-seam-track-pants

TM1979 · 18/04/2024 12:42

Going by my dd15 popular stuff is:
White fox hoodies
Lounge wear in cream/grey
Womens best leggings
White Nike Air Force
North face cropped padded jacket (black)
Zara Molly Mae cropped leather biker jacket
Bershka cargos

Brilliant many thanks everyone loads of pointers for me here - I'm sure I'll get it wrong and probably better to get her to choose I know!

All teen girls around here wear large pale grey joggers (brand to suit budget) and a long-sleeved, cropped, skin-tight black top, to show a band of skin just below the ribs/above their belly-button. Maybe with a matching grey or black hoodie on top if it is actually snowing.

idontlikealdi · 18/04/2024 15:37

I'd look at what her friends / girls around town are wearing. EG North Face would be social suicide here(Dts are 13). It's Nike Pro leggings or shorts, Air force ones / crocs, Primark vest tops and White Fox

Or just take her shopping!

WineThirty · 18/04/2024 15:58

I know lots of people are suggesting to take her on a shopping trip or give money to spend herself, but my DDs like to have some surprises to open on the day (Christmas too) so understand the sentiment of wanting to buy for her. I do try to choose mine two or three things (usually with the help of much younger colleagues at work!). We also do a shopping trip after their birthdays/Christmas and they can exchange anything they don't like with no offence on my part. I would say i have about a 90% success rate and enjoy the challenge of choosing something they like. They are at uni now and generally buy from vinted or charity/vintage shops when buying for themselves but still like to get some new stuff from me (generally good quality stuff).

When younger teens, one of them was always easy because she liked to wear the same kinds of things as her friends so if she was that age today i think she would be happy with lots of things on the list above. The other one, however, would call these kinds of things "basic" and liked to wear stuff a bit different from the norm. She was definitely more challenging to choose for!
