Help me style out this dress for my wedding

Hello all,

I'm getting married in July. It's pretty low key and mainly an outdoors affair in my PIL garden. I've ordered this dress in the red and due to my height (5'11) expect it the hit closer to a tea dress length (willing to have it take up an inch or two if needed). Help me style this out to an old hollywood glamour type thing! I'm hoping to wear flats unsure on veil/jewellery/gloves etc.

Of course you must wear what you want. But if the outfit doesn't match the season it can look like you are dressing up rather than wearing a dress for your wedding.

I do think your dress is definitely a winter dress. Even in Scotland in July!

All that is lovely, @Crucible, for Winter. In Summer it might just look perverse. And odd. As if the wedding is more about costume than the serious business of getting married.

Sorry, I know what you mean about seasonality but the 'more about costume than the serious business of getting married' bit made me imagine showing up just the two of us to a registry office in matching tactical ghillie suits. 😁

Have perked up a bit from my earlier gloom and decided I will probably go for something else for the wedding but keep the dress I ordered (along with matching lipstick, pearls, gloves and veiled fascinator to be sourced) for the honeymoon. I reckon it should be a suitable temperature for evenings in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, even in July!

I’d second the Bombshell recommendation. If you want to stick with velvet they have this in the sale

I have actually been eyeing that dress on and off for months but know in my heart that it will hit me in an unflattering way just above the knee!

Are you wanting to stick with red?

How bold and wow do you fancy going?

FranKubelik · 17/04/2024 17:37

@SideEyeSally Ah yes - hadn’t thought of that. Similar style is on the knee for me at 5’8.

The dress you’ve ordered looks perfect for the honeymoon, especially with those accessories

And all you need to accessorise is a handbag in the shape of a haggis and you’re all set 🙄. Seriously op, your original dress is just lovely. If that’s what you want to wear to get married in then you wear it. Beannachd leat.

Preachingtotheconverted · 17/04/2024 18:12

🤣🤣🤣 and maybe a Bagpipe fascinator?

I wore red when I got married and love red for weddings. Stick with red if I were you.

Crucible · 17/04/2024 18:24

Getting married is a joyous occasion and red is the colour of LOVE! I stand by my suggestions. Keep the dress!

Higglings · 17/04/2024 18:25

I wore something like this

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/282556461921

It was a bustier too, long skirt which laced up at the back and a short jacket

Crucible · 17/04/2024 18:25

Capitalising for emphasis - not shouting I promise!

Higglings · 17/04/2024 18:25

*top (not too)

Westfacing · 17/04/2024 18:26

The 50s Bombshell dresses won't suit the OP as she wants to wear flatties. That Ghost dress is fab and fits the bill, in my humble opinion!

trousersearch · 17/04/2024 18:31

Sorry I haven't read the full thread so I don't know if this has already been suggested but what about the ghost meryl dress? I wore this style to my wedding and it was lovely

Beautiful. I've always wanted one like this but don't think it would suit me.

Elieza · 17/04/2024 21:19

The dress is beautiful. I'd defo keep it. Who cares if it's not winter. It could well be in Scotland. There was snow here last week.

What is your hair like? Is it platinum blonde as that would really go? Or long and dark with luxurious waves and a diamond clip as that too would suit the era.

The weather could be grim and if there is air con at the wedding or reception venue a thick dress could be good!

You have to look at the photos for the rest of your life so make sure you love the dress. Or dresses if you change.

Don't let any of us put you off! We won't see the photos!

FairFuming · 17/04/2024 21:35

I live in the Highlands and it's unlikely to be much above 25 at a push but we do get very hot clammy weather sometimes. If you don't feel the heat then your beautiful dress will be just fine.

I'd you did want something else then these are very pretty
