Do I *really* need to moisturise the bump daily to prevent stretch marks? 🤰🏼

Forgive me, Style and Beauty, for I am a sinner. Despite the very best of intentions, I don’t take my makeup off at night, preferring to collapse straight into bed. I use dry shampoo. I have tons of hand creams but never seem to use them…

But do I really, really, need to be moisturising my stomach and thighs every day to prevent stretch marks? My DM has been saying from day one I should be applying olive oil or coconut oil (😳) daily, else I will be doomed to stretch marks which I shall rue forever. Is this true?

(See also, kegels I suppose, while not strictly style and beauty! Must I?!)

Does your DM have stretch marks? If not then you probably won't either.

You can inherit your skin type from either parent!

Gosh, I am SO jealous that so many of you have no stretch marks after pregnancy 😫

PoppingTomorrow · 16/04/2024 22:01

Jesus, DEFINITELY do your pelvic floor exercises

It genuinely worked for me. I massaged with baby oil most days whilst in the bath. My babies were relatively small though. I have no stretch marks.

I also had two babies and have no stretch marks. But I didn't bother with the cream. It's just luck and genetics.

Greywitch2 · 16/04/2024 22:05

I complained to my GP that I had horrific stretchmarks after Baby No 1 - despite RELIGIOUSLY rubbing in anti-stretchmark cream.

He told me briskly that stretchmarks are caused by the middle layer of skin snapping and that no cream in the world would prevent this.

WeightoftheWorld · 16/04/2024 22:07

No, I never did and only got some small stretch marks on my boobs, none anywhere else.

Mumaway · 16/04/2024 22:10

I moisturised for comfort, but have no stretch marks. My mum has none either though.
Apparently it is important to oil and stretch your fanny though. I didn't do that. I now only have one inner labia (labium??) as the other got so trashed it actually disappeared....I would oil that bit if I were you

Mischance · 16/04/2024 22:12

Three children; no bump moisturizing; no stretch marks - not a single one.

It is a conspiracy by those wishing you would buy their products.

SweetLittlePixie · 16/04/2024 22:12

I did with both pregnancies. Didnt get any stretch marks the first time. But i gained less than 1.5st. Second time i gained over 4st and was covered in stretch marks after giving birth. Most of them have disappeared now though or are very faint fine lines.
I think i would use oil again even if its only in my head. It wont do any harm, so you might as well try.

ajlots · 16/04/2024 22:15

I always remember being told by a dermatologist that no amount of moisturising will help, it's genetic. I didn't do it and I don't really have any, some silver marking if you look very closely (more so from my second pregnancy). My mum didn't get nay either.

Echobelly · 16/04/2024 22:19

I never did any extra moisturising and never got stretch marks from pregnancy.

Looneytune253 · 16/04/2024 22:20

I'm living proof it doesn't make a blind bit of difference. Religiously applied the oils when preg with eldest. Unfortunately weight ballooned due to a health problem and got so so many stretch marks. Second preg I was able to control my weight somewhat, no lotions and potions and zero new stretch marks. Midwife even commented how rare it was to see someone with only old stretch marks.

Feelingreen · 16/04/2024 22:22

I didn’t moisturise every day and didn’t get bad stretch marks. I think it’s genetics.

Definitely do kegels.

Soñando25 · 17/04/2024 06:55

Yes, as others have said, I think it must be genetic. Didn't moisturise, have 4 children and not a single stretch mark.
I would however, ( and I did) do the Kegel exercises.

Mumoftwo1312 · 17/04/2024 07:00

I moisturised plenty with dc1 (mostly to prevent itching, as it was a hot dry summer)

I didn't moisturise at all with dc2, just never had time

Didn't get any stretch marks with either.

There we go, op! Controlled experiment!

C1N1C · 17/04/2024 08:02

As others have said, if your mum has them, you'll have them. Anyone who says cream helped, probably has a mum who doesn't have them.

BodyKeepingScore · 17/04/2024 08:04

No. I never bothered (with my first children because I was young and therefore invincible lol, and with my subsequent pregnancies because I already had children and couldn't be bothered adding things to my to do list). I don't really have any after 4 babies but that's probably good luck, I'm naturally quite petite like the other women in my family so that probably played a part in it

GoodOldEmmaNess · 17/04/2024 08:05

Lol at the very idea of moisturising preventing stretch marks. Perhaps it can heal broken legs too, or prevent strokes.

elevens24 · 17/04/2024 08:20

Bio oil worked for me. Didn't have any until 38 weeks then bump just expanded. Dd was 9.5lbs though.

LutrisTerry · 17/04/2024 08:35

Hi ladies, I know this isn’t the correct thread to post on but just wondering if any of you guys experienced what I’ve explained in the picture attached below?

Do I *really* need to moisturise the bump daily to prevent stretch marks? 🤰🏼
Blessedbethefruitz · 17/04/2024 08:44

I've had 2 babies, no moisturiser, no stretch marks. I was expecting them as I have them on thighs and breasts from puberty, but no!

ringoffiire · 17/04/2024 08:46

It depends on your skin type, age and genetics. Moisturisers/ creams won't really make any difference.

ringoffiire · 17/04/2024 08:46

@LutrisTerry If you know it's the wrong thread, why are you posting here? 😕

LutrisTerry · 17/04/2024 08:48

@ringoffiire sorry I just am desperately looking for some advice or to know if anyone else has experienced it. I’m not able to get anyone’s help really, I’m sorry?

So in other words... It didn't work for you. Because no oil prevents stretch marks.
